  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Russell Brown,

Actually, another one occurs. Lots of people now live in big Auckland CBD apartment buildings which provide internet service at a flat fee along with power, etc. I presume they’re using NAT. In theory the landlord companies are ISPs. In practice … good luck with that.

Its things like this that haven't been adequately thought through that really worry me about this bill. It was rushed through under urgency and it seems far from finished, vague and non specific in some areas and simply flawed in others.

It also won't catch the high download pirates because they will generally be using seedboxes and/or VPNs or TOR. The people that will end up getting the fines will be the occasional torrenters who are really not the main issue.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to BenWilson,

Yes, how many people with broadband do *not* have a NAT router? I presume these rules will be applying to the account holder of the router.

I assume so, but I am more referring to large blocks of ISP customer bases sharing the same IPs.

As I understood it, this was the proposed model for extending IPV4's lifecycle.
Are the government now going to implement plans for an IPV6 takeup?

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill,

The other thing that confuses is me is NAT.

    From wikipedia:

In the mid-1990s NAT became a popular tool for alleviating the consequences of IPv4 address exhaustion.[citation needed] It has become a standard, indispensable feature in routers for home and small-office Internet connections. Most systems using NAT do so in order to enable multiple hosts on a private network to access the Internet using a single public IP address

With the lack of available IPV4 addresses, more and more ISPs will be utilising NAT to share fewer IPs with more customers. It is happening already.

How will it be possible to link the infringement notices with specific users?

Also says something about the subbing at the Herald and Radio NZ that this error was blithely perpetuated in their reporting of the list.

Oh, I thought they eliminated the subeditors as part of the last cost cutting excercise along with journalistic integrity.

worse-case scenario, McCain should be an improvement on Bush but you have to worry about how many Justices he might appoint (and countries he might invade).

I worry that he would be worse.
A lot worse given that he would be emboldened by the fact that he was elected running a campaign on very similar values to Bushes.
It would be like a free ticket to destroy ecological progress, expand international conflict, enable corporate greed machines to get fatter and basically continue to drown the world economy.

  • Hard News: Go Us,

True but ours is one we can do somthing about and a lot of what is going on seems to go under the radar, dismissed as of no importance.

Hey I said both were worth watching closely.
There is definate electioneering going on but the race hasn't really started to heat up yet... its more a case of warning shots and cleaning the cupboards at the moment.
I am leaving our shores so will be watching closely from the UK but if anyone wants to go and deliver fridge magnets and knock on doors in my place please stand up.
I will be extolling the virtues of a absentee vote to the ex pats.

  • Hard News: Go Us,

Is it just me or are there others who think that, just maybe, our General Election might be a little more important than the circus that passes for democracy in the US ?
illic es nullus sic caecus ut illud ut mos non animadverto.

I think that both are worth watching closely.
The outcome of the US elections have a large impact across the globe and should not be ignored.

“It was rightly noted in Denver that Hillary made 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America,” Palin said. “It turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet, and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all.”

Yes... The glass floor more like it.
