but I read a lot of lit-blogs that aren't covering exactly the same terrain as (say) The New York Times or The Guardian, and being read by a highly literary readership.

Chris Laidlaw's first interview after the 9am news yesterday was about Passchendale and he ventured the same horrible analogy.
At Karori Pool in Wellington we live in fear of the small yellow plastic "fecal accident" sign!
I've always thought a quick "pooh in the pool" would be just as effective.
