  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

That takes me back to the dark days of the mid nineties - Hard News kept me sane as the Roger-gnomes ran amok with their wide eyed pea brained Year Zero zealotry. Roger Estall, Peter Shirtcliffe et al - is there an emoticon for "shuddering"?

It was amazing how brain washed some people were. I remember when it was found out that prisoners were making shoes and undercutting the local industry. Kim Hill phoned up a local shoe manufacturer and asked her what she thought. In strangely robotic tones she droned "I believe all competition is good..." I laughed out loud. You can't teach a sneetch.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

Didn't Doug Myers accost Bill Ralston and demand to know why he had called him an arsehole on the radio? He had gotten Mr Brown and Mr Ralstons throaty tones mixed up. Although what Doug Myers was doing listening to BFM is anyones guess.

About the Bain trial coverage: I would be fascinated to discover why the front page story on the Saturday Herald about some suppressed evidence has disappeared from the Heralds website - presumably after legal threats. It did not get any traction after that and for those who missed it the story went like this:

[REDACTED -- PLEASE DON'T REFER DIRECTLY TO THE CONTENT OF THE STORY! RB]

I'm sure a lot more stuff like this will come out as the family and friends break their silence. I'm interested in the feel-good hysteria generated by the supposedly sweet natured Bain, many of his most ardent supporters seem to be middle aged women. It's kind of the reverse of the Peter Ellis case. Maybe it's a Christchurch thing again and we need the marvelous Lynley Hood to sort it all out in a book.

    A joke to finish:

Theres a new drinking game its called The Bain Game. First you run around the block as fast as you can carrying newspapers, then run back inside and have a shot in each room.

  • Hard News: The Sunday Capers,

The PBS archive is wonderful, some of the best documentaries around. I've always wondered why the Documentary Channel on Sky doesn't run them.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Dunne-Powell came across very well and the quotes Russell pulled out from Veitch:

"Which I let myself be driven to that point," "If I had been allowed to walk away", "How I could be driven to a point like that."

...are exactly what sunk his credibility for me. Obviously they had a pretty bitter relationship but he injured her so he really has to suck it up.

I never liked him on TV anyway and was pleased he wasn't there to spoil the Olympics, one of the only sporting contests I take any interest in. He got off too lightly for the Williams sisters "now we know where apes come from" comment. Incidently I listened to the "apology" on Radio Sport the following week on their audio archive and it went a long the lines of: "In a bantering exchange I made some remarks which some people may have taken the wrong way and sorry if they caused offence. Now on with the show..." A classic non apology.

In a further twist the person he was talking to was Willie Jacksons mate Dean Lonergan I would interested to see what Willie would make of this as he has really been on Veitch's case.

As for working on TV let the people decide with their remotes I doubt TV1 will have him back in a high profile role. As Judy Bailey discovered, after it was found out how much she was being paid for reading the news, it spoiled her brand somewhat that instead of looking like the "mother of the nation" she suddenly appeared to be just another grasping Dorklander driving a $150,000 car.

  • Hard News: Old Friends,

Kevin Smith seemed like a great guy, and I remember the moving tribute Russell wrote at the time. It was good to read it again Also sad about Mr Android. they played at Burnside High one lunch time to a handful of students in - perhaps 1982 . I remember how dangerous and rock'n'roll they seemed in the bland suburban school environment especially when the singer announced that one of them had just gotten out of jail!

  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

Don't know anything about Macs really except that I find itunes annoying but perhaps no worse than any other bossy you-must-do-it-this-way media hub. I use Google Chrome browser for windows which is fantastic. All the useless stuff has been stripped away, and a lovely clean interface. The add-ons in Firefox are good but it takes a long time to load. Chrome rulz.

  • Hard News: Public Address Word of the…,

There is nothing more more annoying than a word pedant but these words and phrases have bugged me this year:

"Fabulous" - everybody seems to be saying it in all sorts of inappropriate ways.

"Closure" - any resolution of some tragic circumstance is immediately pronounced an opportunity for this magical thing.

"In terms of..." - this meaningless linguistic fad has made a come back in 2008 after reaching epic proportions a few years ago when absolutely every body in the English speaking world seemed to be saying it: BBC announcers, politicians, reporters, bureaucrats, fire chiefs policeman, etc. Kathryn Ryan says it constantly.
