  • Hard News: Must-have Mayoralty,

What if I'm both bored and masochistic?

Ever seen __Belle de Jour__, Ryan? You're way hotter than Catherine Deneuve, though you're going to have to work on the whole Gallic ice queen/lesbian icon look. :)

*swoon* I would so turn straight for that woman... and what a delightfully eloquent and thoughtful symposium - not least for the mutually respectful and civil tone when differences arose. Thanks for the link, Deborah.

  • Hard News: Must-have Mayoralty,

    Lyndon:

Yes - the academic and profile in courage for standing up to the bully-boy libel action of David Irving. My only excuse is that it's Friday afternoon, and my brain is already powering down until the RSC's Seagull on Sunday. Without Ian McKellen, but never mind: Chekhov, one of the great theatre companies in the English-speaking world, damn fine seats. Must not bitch.

    Andrew:

Yes I did, and it is funny - but would be much more amusing if I didn't think we've only just begun, especially i f there's still a double digit poll gap going into the Christmas recess. Then, I suspect, you can expect 2008 to be a year that will make the 2005 campaign and the later spasm of cross-party panty sniffing look genteel by comparison. I really, really want to be proven wrong.

  • Hard News: Must-have Mayoralty,

BTW, when it comes to 'somewhat more characterful choices' for Mayor, I hope Pete Hodgson will quit Parliament and throw down for the Dunedin mayoralty in 2010. His performances on Morning Report the last couple of days have been pure comedy gold - like a hairy Vicky Pollard.

Unless you're just doing it because you're bored

Or masochistic, don't forget that Russell. (Hope the foot's feeling a lot better, BTW.) Seriously, without triggering Godwin's Law myself, I revere Deborah Eisendtadt for spending her professional life trying to rationally deal with the fundamentally irrational (and pathological deceptive) world of Holocaust denial. But she just keeps plugging away because the truth matters.

  • Hard News: Must-have Mayoralty,

Do either of them really have the substance for the job?

More to the point, how the hell would you know if they did?

  • Hard News: Pills, not so many thrills,

Oh, and this caught my eye in your quote from that Press story (emphasis added):

Social Tonics Association chairman Matt Bowden said the group was working with Chen Palmer on its select committee submission and proposals to the Law Commission and Ministry of Health on a regulatory framework for new pills.

OK, am I the only person who feels a little uncomfortable with a law firm that does extensive work for the government and government departments on the one hand, acting as lobbyists for special interest groups on the other? Just a little too 'K Street' cosy for my blood.

But it's interesting to see Labour now acting like an Opposition party and employing the same slow-drip attempt to erode its opponents' credibility as has worked so well for National.

Emphasis on the 'attempt' part, and I think there has to be a meaningful distinction drawn between (legitimate) political and policy differences, and the personally destructive crap that runs from the petty to the outright sinister.

I really think Labour is falling into the same trap as the rabid right-wingnuts who think screeching to the converted doesn't give everyone else the shits. OK, I know there are going to be people who do now, and always will, think John Key is an evil Rogernome who will sell New Zealand as a job lot to Darth Rove by morning tea time given half the chance. Just as there are now, and always will be, those who think Helen Clark is a malevolent bitch squatting at the apex of a vast man-hating, anti-family Communist-Lesbian Cabal.

    What-fraking-ever.

  • Hard News: KGB yeah!,

Buggery ballocks... could you please schedule the next GB for an evening I don't have an unbreakable prior engagement. :) Hope there's going to be lots of lovely podcasts for us poor mortals - Mr. Brown sure gives good interview (though loyalty forces me to say PA Radio's effort was much better than Nine To Noon's. :) )
