Admittedly it was a veiled threat on Sundays National Radio (sorry it was Mediawatch).

"This particular commentator has shown his colours, he has shown his tactics and he will be judged by these tactics as well." Paul Thomson about Keith Ng

Michael, come on... I'm not carrying water for Coddington here, but I think your characterisation is every bit as OTT as Thomson's general tone. Sorry, but I think he had a fair point under the hyperbole - whatever problems I have with Coddington (quite a few, believe you me) I've not particularly liked the rather shrill ad hominem that's crept into this. God knows Debs practically begs for it as often as not, and I wouldn't blame Keith for rising to the bait after pretty much being called a liar with a hidden agenda, but I can't help feeling there's a more serious problem that nobody seems to be talking about in the rush to urinate on Coddington.

Heh... you're quite right, Mr. Griffin, I'm sure the shade of Miss Austen would not be amused. :) But I just get a wee bit irritated at born-again Puritans who think every damn thing has to be 'important' - because, as Kingsley Amis wrote in another context, 'importance' isn't important, good writing is. At the risk of sounding like a wretched bum kisser, was Outrageous Fortune the most significant drama to ever see the light of the cathode ray tube? Stuff off, but it was an entertainment produced with some wit, style and heart and I don't think that's anything to be sniffed at.

I don't know much about history pre-I Love Lucy so how did this "Panem et circenses" thing turn out for the Romans, then?

Kind of shitty for the Christians and the lions and whatnot. Then again, I'm sure my habit of re-reading Jane Austen every year could be deemed "trivial and unimportant" - just before I threw something hard at your head.

  • Island Life: Child's play,

Losing the America's Cup cost N.Z. millions. I dtill can't understand how anyone who hurts their country like that can sleep straight at night.

About as easily as Peter Jackson after putting hundreds of millions of dollars in tax credits in the pocket (ultimately) of TimeWarner, one of the largest media conglomerate on Earth? Do you think he had an uneasy night after stacking the lead cast with foreigners who (presumably) don't pay a lot of income tax in New Zealand?

And I actually think words like 'mercenary' and 'traitor' have meanings - and they shouldn't be trivialised as a cheap and ugly drive-by smear. There are a lot of people, including a good proportion of PA's readership I respectfully submit, who are expats "depriving" this country of their taxable income and skills. Think about that for a moment, and can the inverted cultural cringe. If anything makes me ashamed of my own country that's it.

  • Island Life: Child's play,

You are mercenaries who made a calculated decision that economically harmed your homeland.

In my book, you've forfeited any right to be taken seriously when you equate anyone who is messing around on a sail boat with people who kill for the highest bidder. And I don't really want to threadjack by restating my very low opinion of economic nationalism, especially when it's framed at such a mindless level.

  • Island Life: Child's play,

OK, perhaps I'm being unfair to the Herald. Considering the other two front page stories, and being a good conservative, I have to give 'em mad props for honouring the traditional war cry 'if it bleeds, it leads'.

  • Island Life: Child's play,

it surely doesn't deserve the lead story on the front page of the Herald. WTF?

The editorial judgement of the O'Herald, like the peace of God, surpasses human understanding. I.F. Stone once said you never knew where in The Washington Post you' d find a front-page story. Well, nowhere on page A1 of today's Herald, that's for sure.

  • Hard News: Ready to Fly,

During my ex-pat days my boss referred to Singapore as 'a cross between East Germany and Disneyland'. I've never heard it summed up so well

William Gibson called Singapore 'Disneyland with the death penalty' which might have its charms, but I'll be stuffed if I can see them.

  • Yellow Peril: Asian Angst: is it time to…,

"Labour endorses child molesting!" for example.

There's very little in the way of untrammelled malevolence I wouldn't lay at the feet of Hullum Klark and the Liarbore Dykeocracy (and that's sarcasm folks, please don't bust a blood vessel), but really...

In a sane would I'd automatically assume you're (crudely) taking the piss, rodgerd - and if we're thinking about the same story, it was another case of a reasonable hard news story getting smothered under the tabloid hysterics. Don't really see who won that game.
