  • Hard News: Mr Brown,

They loath Labour with a lively "retired colonel" vigour, providing an amusing if slightly sepia tinged irrelevancy.

Don,do you actually bother reading The Telegraph? I do, and if you think it's some kind of cheering section for the Conservatives then I suspect Lady Thatcher, Messers Major, Hague, Duncan Smith, Howard and Cameron would have a dissenting view point.

And if it's 'sepia tinged irrelevancy' to think the centeralisation of power in Downing Street, a spreading culture of spin and politicisation of the civil service and erosion of civil liberties over the last decade is a bloody bad thing... then I'd say 'relevance' can go hang.

  • Hard News: What's on David Bain's iPod?,

Actually given Alan's response, maybe the best question would be: "David, why did you do it?"

Hadyn, I know this is terribly po-faced but you do recall Bain might well be facing another trial? He's on bail, not acquitted. And if he does it's going to be hard enough to impanel a reasonably unbiased jury without some clever dick hack pulling the 'have you stopped beating your wife" interview technique.

  • Hard News: What's on David Bain's iPod?,

Do you think David Bain actually gets all the jokes about his sweater? Do you think he even remembers what he wearing when he was arrested?

No, and having done my time on the police/court beat, I've got to say the standard of couture among the criminal fraternity is not one to make a fashionista's pulse race. Pop culture lies again... :)

Just to play the devil's advocate for a moment, I'm a bit more worried about the media bitch pack baying for blood after the death of the Kahui Twins.

I know it's tiresome - and pretty crap television - when the Police have to build a case before they lay charges, don't make public every detail of an ongoing investigation, and actually have to respect all that silly legal crap about not being able to coerce people into co-operating with their inquiries. What kind of world are we living in when not every thing revolves around the media?

  • Hard News: Claims,

I do get a little protective about an institution I've been involved with in various ways for almost half my life. If anyone wants to bring any actual evidence that the National Party is financing or covertly helping Investigate's brand of gutter filth, put it on the table. I wouldn't want to support an organisation like that in any way - financial, with my time and labour, or (most importantly) at the ballot box. All's fair in love and war - but not politics.

And for the record, I also get a little impatient with the nutbags of the rabid right who think the entire Press Galley are under the hypnotic powers of the vast 'Liarbore Klark' Lesbian Cabal. ( (c) guess who). If I every fall prey to that psychosis, don't 'call me out' - ring around and stage an intervention. Please.

  • Hard News: Claims,

Hmmm.....it isn't uncommon for an organisation to have a shadow organisation, "not connected", to pursue those things which need to be officially denied - I've seen it myself (not in a political party). Not that I'm saying that national does such things.....

Not at all, John... Liberal columnist Michael Kinsley's assessment of the first President Bush comes to mind: "Lacking the courage of your nastiness doesn't make you nice." At least Wishart doesn't sugar coat his malice, which is about the only nice thing I'll ever say about the man.

  • Hard News: Claims,

And Craig if you don't think it's an issue who is paying you, how come the EB's donations dragged Don down?

    Merc:

Look, I've made my position on conspiracy theories about who finances Investigate perfectly clear - and I'm going to fucking have a stroke of those chinless, scarf-wearing weirdos get trotted out for another go-round as a fashionable bogeyman.

Perhaps I need to say this in tiny words: Wouldn't wipe my arse with a copy of Investigate, and if I was on the receiving end of a Wishart smear job I wouldn't give a damn if his shitty rag was being personally financed by God Almighty Himself.

    Crystal?

  • Hard News: Mr Brown,

Not getting a poll surge, of course, is Helen Clark, who actually slipped behind John Key in the preferred Prime Minister category of Sunday's TV3 poll.

And just to rain on my own parade, so what? It might actually mean something if New Zealand was the United States, France or any other country where the executive and legislative branches of government are elected separately, but it's not. But I don't think you could even get two poli sci geeks to agree on the extent to which party leadership influences voter behaviour.

  • Hard News: Mr Brown,

Sorry about the Prescott mistake. *memo to self* shut trap, read book first

Nah, Prescott tends to be memorable for all the wrong reasons, if at all. I actually thought he'd been firmly encouraged to resign after a pretty gaffe-filled 2006, but it turned out not to be the case. Hardly one of the glittering jewels in the crown of the Blair regime.

  • Hard News: Mr Brown,

Didn't Brown take a swing at someone in the last election? Cameron could be in for a very rough time.

That was John Prescott back in 2001, and somehow I don't think the electors are going to be quite so indulgent of the Deputy PM getting in fistfights with protestors next time out.

Brown is going to have to bring a lot more to the dispatch box than 'I'm not Tony Blair (may his name be ever cursed!) and the Tories eat puppies'. He can give Dubya a Liverpool kiss at the G7, declare an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, but there's still those thorny domestic perennials -- health, education, welfare and policing. I just don't think the spin on the recent local body election -- it was more about Tony Blair and Iraq than any real dissatisfaction about the Government's domestic agenda - rings true.
