  • Hard News: Friday Music: History, motherfuckers, in reply to Dean Papa,

Women make choices with their hearts, and men with their heads? Do you REALLY believe this? You haven't met the PAS Womens' XV, have you? I find it disheartening that such bollocks is still generally regarded by some as a kind of truth. I also find it appalling that you think that people of this community have formed a "vicious and angry bullying mob". People have stated disagreement and dismay, that's all I've seen. Unless you're feeling particularly guilty about something? That's usually what discomfort around such matters comes down to.

I don’t think anyone’s been harsh at all, Dean. I rather think the opposite, in fact. The thing is, you see, that NZ is a very tiny country. And so it stands to reason that a good number of people who read that review would know Ella, and/or her family in some capacity or other. So to think you can print just any old rubbish about someone is just not on, and shouldn’t be let go. He was wrong. Not about his assessment of her music, he’s entitled to think what he likes about that. But don’t go spewing vileness. Which people really only do when they are allowed to do so.
Also, I refer you to Emma's posts about "the missing stair". It is quite possible that Sweetman is a classic example.

Oh for the love of someone quite deified. Just not even worth any attention at all.

Most everything I want to say has already been said about this matter. But I will say this: Ella's mum is a very dear friend of mine, and I know she was absolutely devastated to read the review, and it took all of the Twitter Aunties to convince her that she should just ignore the vileness. I don't buy the "freedom of speech/everyone is entitled to an opinion" argument for this reason: if what is said is going to deeply hurt someone, completely unnecessarily, then please keep that opinion to yourself. A music review should be a review of the music. End of.

  • Hard News: Game Lorde,

She's an extraordinary young woman. All personal biases aside - I know and love her mum well - I found her performance last night transfixing. She has a rare talent - singing and songwriting as given, but all the ability to hold the stage. And she has a face that tells you who she will be in coming years. So beautiful.

I have missed all the shenanigans. I simply pop in to say, David, how very much you look like your beloved grandfather.

This man should not be allowed to be around your little girl. Ever.

Oh, how this resonates. For all women. I have this problem at the moment - an acquaintance that others find discomfiting, and I feel I am likely going to be the one who has to tell him that his behaviour around women is unseemly, and not okay, Mainly because I'm not one of the women he creeps on.
