  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

But thats all there is to it... a perception that its promotional.

Which is also my point about the TVNZ7 banner ad at the top of the this page. Yes, it moves on, but the first image is a smiling Bill English, with the caption "get it in plain english" with the english big, bold and in National party blue.

It's not an advertisement for the National party, I know that. But that first image looks and reads like it could be.

The banner ad is making the same fundamental error the television ad does, by thinking that a high-profile politician can be used as a "celebrity attractor" to a product without it in any way being political.

Hi there. Um, I may've missed this discussion elsewhere on Public Address, but as a lefty liberal, can I just ask:

Why is Public Address running an advertisment for Bill English as it's banner ad?

Woah, imagine that - a rugby world cup run by The Osbournes!

  • Field Theory: Like a punch in the face,

Another reason the WWE has become the "king of the PPV" is that when you spend your money you know you're going to get entertainment.

Similarly, with MMA events, while it's more legimate*, each match is short enough that if one is a let down the next should still be enjoyable watching.

Boxing, though, the events are too long, the undercard to uninteresting, there is no guarentee of entertainment or money's worth. The PPV model has changed that boxing, the sport that began the concept, has been superseeded by the expectations of a public that wants to be sure it's getting value for money.

*(as in it still purports to be a sport... but wait until they decide to capitalise on the big money with a Brock Lesnar vs Bobby Lashley best of three competition... want to bet it won't end after two bouts?)

  • Field Theory: No draught in here,

Sounds like a great time was had. Pleased to see, looking down the list, that Renaissance were recognised for their APA - that's my favourite supping beer these days.

The Armageddon IPA certainly sounds quite different from theaged barrel. When I tried it, from the first bottled batch, I just found it too harsh and one-note (and that note was HOPS, screamed from the rooftop).

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

I know that Andy, but any other change to the law won't be what we voted (or didn't vote) on.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

You know, I can see a way the government can appease the "no" voters and pass the buck to others, all while actually changing absolutely nothing.

Simply add a clause to S59 that states "Nothing is this section shall make a smack as part of good parental correction a criminal offence."

Imagine the fun and games the police and the courts will have with that! What is a smack? What is correction? And, most fascinatingly of all, what is good parenting?

Seven years in the hallowed halls of Vic. BA(Hons) in Philosophy and International Relations. Student Loan of approximently one metric fuck-tonne of money.

Only directly marketable skill I can point to from all that was being able to touch type incredibly fast (due to having to finish papers half-an-hour before they were due).

Wouldn't change it for the world!

  • Hard News: Sunday blues, and we're on Sky,

For me it's MySky (how did I even survive before MySky??), the Living Channel (yes! I confess! I prolly watch more stuff on the LC than on any other), UKTV (some great British shows on there), the Documentary/History/NatGeo channels, The Box (for Law&Order), and the sports channels so I can watch tennis at odd hours of the night and the occasional game of rugby.

    And WWE Pay-Per-Views.

No, stop laughing! It's why I'm still with Sky!

  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

Thank you for sharing this fanastic post, Russell.

And, well, I'm in my mid thirties, and starting to get those mild constant nagging pains and twinges here and there, now and then, and you've got me thinking. Time to see a GP, I think!

Wishing you a speedy and comfortable recovery!
