  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics,

people talking is better than people walking

How’s this for an idle speculation:
what if the Act deal is that Key leaves after the election, once National is safely back in power, but before they have to do anything that would impact on Key’s legacy (until this week) as NZ’s most popular politician?
Hawaii would start looking pretty attractive at such a time, ne?

*sigh* If Labour had any oomph, they might be focussing on promoting their own policies. (Attacking possible Nat coalitions is too easily countered by a "Vote National, get National" line.)

one of those things that people assume should be true
like that raising taxes or minimum wages reduces economic growth

or that getting tougher on crime always produces a more pleasant society.

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

For me, the most damaging piece of hubris is in the final paragraph:

Mr English believed the public would be receptive or at least compliant towards further major economic reform in the next parliamentary term.

How compliant are you feeling right now, New Zealand?

In any fair minded country those quotes would sink the speaker, surely

Can’t see why. Unless the speaker is campaigning against MMP?
(The “hard decisions” referred to might be social policy as easily as economic. For example, raising the minimum age of eligibility for pensions: unpopular, but probably necessary in long term – which means you need to make the argument for it before doing it.)
Where National should have a credibility gap here is that it has not bothered to make any serious argument for doing anything – instead shutting down debate whenever possible.

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

    Um, remind me again,
    are crime rates decreasing?
even if so, can it be shown to have anything to do with National’s policy direction?
and, ah, if crime rates are being reduced, why do we need new prisons and a streamlined, slimlined justice system?

I’d really like to see more journos laughing in the face

... of any politician spouting waffle, really.
I'd also like to hear the line "No, seriously, what's your actual policy on this matter?" used more often. Or at all.

    that tea-drinking Key

I want to see what Key’s like after a few beers goddammit.
C’mon, prove you’re a real man, ya wuss!
Tea, pffft, whaddarya, going after Winston’s support base or summat?
