  • Southerly: Bob's Top Five,

Since she was six, my daughter and I cycled to school through her time at primary school (only one particularly tricky intersection on the route, and we would get off our bikes and become pedestrians for that section).
Going to Intermediate the policy was you could arrive at the school gates either in P.E. gear or formal uniform, and the daughter continued to cycle to school. Then the policy was changed that you had to arrive at the school in Official Uniform and the daughter stopped cycling to commute- Not because of having to cycle in a helmet (having not known anything else) but because of having to cycle in a kilt.

I'll accept that, but I feel it won't always apply. We'll have GM'ed insects, bacteria, and even humans soon enough, and you won't be able to undo those things.

Actually, we already have GM'ed humans. Gene therapy for curing blindness caused by mutated RPE65 genes is currently in human clinical trials.

Highly technical paper available at Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

I am as comfortable with using genetic manipulation to cut carbon emissions as I am for using it to cure blindness. Which is to say thoroughly comfortable providing both are done in a good, ethical investigation science kind of way.

  • Hard News: Clover It,

    Soylent Green is Plankton!
(by which I mean there is a lot further down the food chain humans could eat if they had to, it just would be very fun).

My impression on the opposition to GE is that it links to both anti-corporatism (due to the history of GE and Monsanto), and some Linnaeusian notions on the inviolateness of taxonomies (despite what we now know about naturally occurring horizontal gene transfer).

  • Island Life: That's my cab,

Having been looking fairly intently at property prices in Dunedin, I'd tend to say that while they are a couple of optimists offering at 18% over valuation, the mode offering price is about 5% under valuation, with an overall offering mean of right at the valuation (I can haz spreadsheet). I'd be guessing the mean settling price is lower, but that's not information I have access to.
My gut feeling is that anyone who bought in the past five years, and is going to be selling in the next 15 or so, is likely to be sharing the pain of future generations as the situation equalizes a little.

And, thank you for your column contributions.

  • Field Theory: Settle a bet,

It is the daughter's job to organise the cutlery for dinner.
Last night she had gotten to it by the time the soup was ready, and my wife intoned "There is no spoon", which my daughter found baffling.
Even more baffling when I added
    "there is only zuul"
I have been known to quote "curse your sudden, yet inevitable, betrayal".
Does "DARK IN HERE, ISN'T IT?" count, since there has been a TV movie/ miniseries adaption?

Because Jack isn't a very interesting character

Indeed, and Galahad isn't a very interesting character in the Grail quest.

To extend the metaphor, since I've been thinking about it, of the three knights that got to the Grail: Galahad achieved the Grail and went to Heaven; Percival (the most humane one) stayed in the land of the Grail as King, and Bors (most inclined to fight) returned from the land of the Grail.

Sawyer and Kate were on runway building duty as part of being prisoners of the Others back in Season 3. The runway was apparently built on Jacobs instructions.
