  • 2010: The Cultural YTD,

Today's response from Air New Zealand to a Listener editorial (flagged in full-page ads in the papers) is brilliant:

That IS clever - we wondered what the full-page ads were this morning, my wife managing to decipher "Dear Listener" at the top, but it was too early in the morning to cope with a whole page of it - will definitely pass that on when I get home.

  • 2010: The Cultural YTD,

The Fall have put out another album, all is right with the world.

Went to a concert (Joanna Newsom) this year for the first time in aaaaaaages, and it's made me want more. Pity the interesting bands (interesting to me anyway) tend to avoid Christchurch.

Ditto Iain M Banks - hurry up and write another book, man!

  • Field Theory: American Gods,

I can only think of two who are still revered in some way: Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Peter Blake. Both are dead and both did work overseas.

    Bring back Buck?

(on a completely "unrelated to sports" note, some wag had a "Bring Back Buck" banner outside the Christchurch City Council offices protesting something Sideshow Bob had been doing)

  • Cracker: Cup of Tea and a new Electoral System,

    From that Scoop article:

Put MMP to the Vote is recommending New Zealand voters adopt the supplementary member system, which will halve the number of list MPs and limit the power of minor parties to frustrate the will of the people.

What "people" exactly? What if I'm one of those who voted for a minor party, doesn't my will matter?

  • Field Theory: In the middle of the night,

First FA Cup final I can remember is the Sunderland-Leeds final in 1973, and that great underdog victory got me hooked on the FA Cup forever. Improbable sideburns, a great stripey kit, and a victory over Leeds - what more could a game want?

  • Hard News: The Internet is for ... Privacy?,

Mediawatch sounded a cautionary note about the news media's use of social media for story leads.

This, and the associated reporting of Facebook messages, "Your Views" posts and tweets as news, is something that seems to be happening more and more. Do reporters not actually go and interview real people any more, or do they just trawl Facebook, follow people on Twitter, and regurgitate press releases?

Can we have a few less reporters and a few more journalists, please?
