I've been having moon arguments on the internets for nearly ten years now. First time around was with someone who said you couldn't deny the moon's influence, look at the human menstrual cycle.

Its the lycanthropes crazy people. They are everywhere and now they are being 'home grown" in way out of the way places to invade the country around christmas time:

The moon has slowed down a bit remember. It was 28 days....once.... caveman time or before?

And the menstrual cycle was invented about here:

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

I remember a TV interview with Lou Reed just as CDs first hit the scene. (Was it with Dylan Taite?)

What was memorable was his impassioned plea with head turned directly at the camera saying something like:

"Go out and buy CDs. They are wonderful. You won't believe what you are hearing".

    Or words to that effect.

    Re the Bike Tracks

Isn't it wonderful how you feel when you get to the other end of your ride through the boonies via tracks that don't take in the roads? For some reason the lack of the need to keep an eye out for cars and trucks and - bogans - makes the trip so much more meaningful and enjoyable.

The goal of any cycle track system is seperation of road vehicles and bikes. The new Mway system in Petone has failed on all counts. Bikes having to cross off and on ramps, and not much more than a metre in places clearance to the left hand lane.

    Have fun!!! Enjoy!

  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

Re George Darroch. You are dead right. Fully concur.

Ross Martin??? And no, no squares, aprons or compasses anywhere in the house I am afraid Islander.

My Bull/Cow analogy was to show the lack of visible identity of gender differences within the bull/cow population. It is obvious - and George pointed to it that almost certainly there are mixed members within bull/cow. (MMB or MMC??)

I am fully aware that homosexual behaviour occurs in nature which makes the occurance in humans all the more natural surely.

The difficulty comes with the lack of decent social messages of the acceptance of gender/sex differences. Be they biologically traced or socially steered.

The acceptance is a two way street. The rabid anti gay rights brigade and the rabid anti men brigade is where the war is at. And wasn't that some of the point of the Russell's post???

And yes, I need to be careful about which word - sex or gender - I should use. Has it reached the same usage plane as gay? Hijacked it has been yes.

  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

    Bull. Cow.

    Male. Female.

I have been wracking my brain trying to remember if I have ever encountered a gender neutral bull/cow. Or even a genuine bull>cow or a cow>bull. Yes, steers and cows "bonk" their own when in heat but I don't recall seeing overt lesbian cows huddling in the corner keeping to themselves or keeping safe from the bulls....the huddle appeared more for protection from predators rather than a rampant bull.

It is an interesting intellectual excercise to figure out the human world by starting with the premise we are truly "animal" and worked our way up to the thinking folk we are now rather than start with the premise that the world is ours and we have been gifted the ability of reason, are perfect and socially "tunable".

Maybe we can be socially steered but I suspect the driver that decides which gender route is taken is biologically based.

Are we born to accept our own but socially steered to accept others?

One obvious example stands out and that is the abuse by step parents that prevails in child abuse / deaths. So obviously related to the new bull / alpha male making sure that his genes are the ones propogated in the herd once he reaches head walla.

Countered of course by the dog that mothers the baby pig or kitten.

My Mum spent years trying to get me to find things myself. Like the butter in the fridge. I defy anyone to tell me that it is not a "male thing" that prevents me from easily identifying the damn thing!!! Methinks it is a gene left over from Kill Buffalo days.

Remember Loretta. Men can have the right to have babies....not much else ...at the moment...

  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

Why do people focus so much on the birth experience?

I could get into Dawkins on this.

But I suspect it is something to do with selfish genes and their tenacity and ability to 'guide' the mechanism that ensures their survival.

What better way than to get the parentS to consider it with awe and amazement.

I think the most stunning effect of nasty hormones like prolactin on males at least was the wave of attachment that swept over me! It seemed a tap had suddenly been turned on in my brain. And babies (others especially) screeching cries did not affect me anywhere near as much.

    Gio
Sorry, no ridicule intended at all. Fashion may have been the wrong word for the sentence. I recall that my brain had moved to the "Fashion" of caesarian, so I plonked it in and failed to notice the change in sense.

Rumour has it that all humans have passed throught the birth canal or slice....for ever...and practically all of it with assistance of the mother alone or the mothers mother or midwifery expertise. So, yes, it does have plenty going for it. The informed choice is the key. Make the decision and .......wait....

The first birth is always the hardest. It is probably one of the steepest learning curve anyone will ever face in life.

Here is ours. Seven miscarriages before managing to get a goer. The first had bed rest for practically 3 months before delivery 'cos the damn placenta had not hooked on properly. 30 hours or something in hospital. Sliced usunder by the wonderful episiotomy, desperately fighting to keep the baby in the same bed let alone the same room as wifey. Latched within minutes of birth. Scarliy wonderful.

The others were marvels of "non-intervention". We were very well informed by the time the second and third turned up and learnt when to say no, (eg) not the knife this time thanks.....

I suspect that quite a large proportion of expectant mothers turn up to the hospital at the last minute and get right into it. What amazes me is that the parents do this with little preparation. For something that has taken 9 months to turn up you can't say there wasn't time.

So how do we educate and inform them? Should "we" even try?
