  • Island Life: Publishers in crisis!,

Hah, and I thought it was just a ruse to get in early and steal Russell's thunder this morning. I bet Russell Brown was awake all night dreaming up the magic words that would shake NZ. I can only imagine the crinkly lips when he saw the what this usurper had done.

Will this "Stadium Stoush" know no end?

  • Hard News: Let's be hearing it,

If the e-mail was stolen, then I'm uncertain as to how I feel abut it being published.

Well, Brian Edwards was pretty unequivocal in condemning the use of "stolen" emails by Hager yesterday.

I cannot see any party in NZ doing that to their opponents, what they do internally to each other is a different story c.f. "Yes Minister :-) I really don't think politicians here are that low (despite some pretty hysterical claims to the contrary here and elsewhere).

Graeme - care to back that up with a link. I have read the opposite but cannot find stats either way. Obviously it also depends on who the Herald chose to represent Auckland. A ring around Epson might have considerably different results to Mt Albert.

My point remains the same, this is not a notionwide poll and we don't even know which sub-areas were selected so pretty meaningless. Not as meaningless as a count of emails from readers but up there nonetheless.

  • Hard News: Let's be hearing it,

Herald digipoll today shows National on 47.3% support, seven percent ahead of Labour.

Interesting figures, it should be pointed out that was a poll of Aucklanders. I believe Auckland voted in bigger numbers for National than Labour in the General Election. That poll was at least carried out by a rebutable organisation.

The one from the Herald that Plunket quoted on National Radio this morning was a disgrace.

Under the headline "Herald readers opt for Eden Park" we discover:

That is clear from a breakdown of emails received by the newspaper in response to questions about readers' choice of arena to host the 2011 cup final.

    Unbelievable.

  • Hard News: Let's be hearing it,

Plunket is a pretty lousy interviewer.

As you pointed out he tends to have his arm round some subjects who need to be interviewed whilst he is willing to shout at others. Vis also his efforts with the Chair of the ARC this morning. That man had some interesting things to say but all Plunket could do was yell and interrupt about the "unacceptably short" timeframe for the decision.

Maggie Barry a diamond when she gets on air. Not only can she ask hard questions, calmly, she actually listens to answers and adjusts her questioning appropriately.

Her interview with a snivelling Judith Collins was a classic.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

Don, no snide sneer at Wellington intended. what I was getting at was that in this case it's being called a National Stadium, which implies it will be treated, funding-wise

Ok, not sure that the CakeTin or Jade received the same largesse. Just ask Karori Sanctury how they benefitted from their Capital location in funding allocation.

However, if it will help the cause and for the record, this tax payer is happy for central Government to use it's money to finance the project. I suspect the Government will be carrying most of the liability for cost overruns anyway.

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

They'll propose that we do something splendid on the Tank Farm in due course, without suspending the RMA and democratic process and call it a National Stadium. This stadium would be funded by the government rather then the people of Auckland. That's the way they do it with 'National' buildings in Wellington.

Well, we know you are on weak ground when you feel the need to slag off Wellington, all that was missing was a referrence to Helengrad :-)

I presume you are still aware the the proposed upgrade to Eden Park requires "a suspension of the democratic process and RMA" as well. Oh, and that the Eden Park bill has already gone from $50million to $380million.

By the way, you get a chance to reassert the democratic process in 2 years time so don't fret too much on that account, will you.

Too right Craig. The bed pan, doughnut, condom, glass turd (my own off the cuff contribution) and weeping writers do so much for calm rational analysis.

But hey, you go ahead and call us "yes" folks out for abuse of emotion.

  • Island Life: Supply-sider moves into deficit,

Last article I read by Freidman showed he was also a "flat taxer". Even Donald Regan (Reagan's Secretary of Treasury/Chief of Staff) thought flat tax was a ridiculous idea.

As an aside, Regan's description of the final years of the Reagan presidency are mind boggling.
