  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

a cushy career in the public service

Further teeth gritting nonsense from Hickey about that, blinded by ideology.

Apparently our private sector is performing so badly because the gummint pays its workers a few percent more. Thank goodness "encouraging growth" needs nothing more than slashing some public servants. It worked so well in the 90s after all..

  • Hard News: New Zealand Weekend Television,

The Herald quote I published earlier was clear that the sponsorship money was used to defray costs. However I suspect the barrage of advertising reduced the amount of donations.

I agree Trillian seems a dodgy choice - although I know some folk are also unimpressed with the Warehouse's contribution to destroying local retail and manufacturing jobs.

Bless the Your Views massive. I knew there must be enother way of interpreting the problem.

Tier 2 presenters pulling shifts in pairs

NickD and Shavaughn did an admirable job during the part that I saw in the early hours. The "news" segments seemed uncomfortable and I'm not sure that a responsible adult presence throughout would have fitted any better.

Who knows, the awareness that tens of thousands of children in our country go to school every day without shoes or breakfast might linger on?

If someone got organised around that, bigger changes might result. Gosh, political parties could even mobilise to tackle the problem.

In the meantime, at least there will be some more shoes, raincoats and food. Sure that's not the best way and it might even send the wrong signals.

However, those who could eliminate poverty have been sucessfully ignoring it for many years. I somehow doubt that the recipients will curse Kids Can for undermining the bigger fix.

  • Hard News: New Zealand Weekend Television,

    Numbers.

KidsCan general manager Julie Helson said the event cost more than $1 million to produce, but at least 87 per cent was covered by sponsors and in-kind support.

None of the donated cash would go towards TV3's production costs for the 23-hour broadcast, she said.

"It's the first time ever in the history of telethon that the event has been sponsored to a level where there's going to be a significant return," Helson said.

I reckon John would do it for fun, expecially after his recent gushing on-air praise of many a "gorgeous" man. Might attract a Hayley Holt smackdown, but.

  • Hard News: Deja Vu,

Traditional Nact booster Fran O'Sullivan is unimpressed all-round with the behaviour of our MPs about their perks:

Labour's chief whip Darren Hughes is prosecuting the issue on his party's behalf without any sense of shame that the previous leadership of his party protected Field up to the point where questions were being asked about Clark's own motivations.

There is a public interest in inquiring further into whether the English family trust (despite Bill English's denials) did rearrange the ownership of assets so that the Finance Minister could make the maximum claim on the public purse for his and his family's Wellington accommodation.

So far, Key is not buying into Labour's push for more transparency in this area. But this stance - like with the previous fiasco surrounding allegations that former National Cabinet minister Richard Worth was prepared to trade positions for favours - is starting to wear thin.

The Cabinet has not shied away from depriving beneficiaries of their "entitlements" to taxpayer help towards tertiary education.

Unfortunately, Key, English - and Labour's own hierarchy - appear oblivious to the rank stench of hypocrisy.

    Doesn't sound too honeymoonish anymore.
