  • Hard News: Crossing the line into idle bigotry, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I guess it’s cheaper than paying a thug to come around every morning and hit one.

Oh, I dunno. I'd recommend leaving an old brick next to your laptop for head banging purposes. Replacing that if you broke it would be much cheaper than replacing a laptop screen that suddenly acquired an imprint of your nose and forehead.

  • Hard News: Crossing the line into idle bigotry, in reply to Ana Simkiss,

Speaking of lazy op eds, anyone have the fortitude

No, I didn't. The headline was more than enough. And I didn't want to ruin a morning made happy by somebody in the NZ media __finally__ noticing that New Zealand companies are getting caught exporting substandard infant formula to China. Far more important than silly old men in my book.

the Daily Show website is geo-blocked. For someone who is not tech savvy, how do you get round it?

You could try using a VPN to get yourself a US IP address.

  • Speaker: Dreams Do Come True, in reply to Richard Aston,

I reckon the rest of the world should get those 80 million unused votes.
Add 80 million global citizens to the "Brown, black, young, gay, urban and female" vote and I reckon Obama would have barely needed to campaign.

Oh and we want global voting rights in the House of Representatives and the Senate as well.

Fair point, but I'd rather the world just put the USA back in its place as just one of many countries. I can't help but wonder how things would be if the world stopped so quickly and lightly facilitating the worst of the USA's global behaviour.

As for Obama, I felt far more relief than joy at his victory. I'm looking forward to his second four years with a mixture of hope - for the reasons Tracey outlined - and apprehension about how the Republican Party and the far right are going to react.

    Glad you like it, but:

the first time I’ve seen a clear blue in one of your China-Sky photos

Well, clear blue skies are kinda rare around these parts, despite 3 out of 4 seasons being bone dry. Couldn’t possibly think why…

But on a more positive, and very tangentially more spring-like note, girl with cloth book on her head - a new take on the joys of reading.

Nice flowers, helped brighten up an otherwise less than ideal few days. There isn't much in the way of flowers here, but at least I'm in a season of cool skies.

Here’s a good website with the list of available academic courses in journalism in NZ, as you can see it’s a mix of polytechnic and University options.

Thanks, Matthew. I’m reading, digesting, wondering…

A few random pre-caffeination thots on journalism:

Aren't the longer, more analytical pieces supposed to be for weeklies and montlies? Aren't our daily newspapers and radio and TV supposed to just keep us up to date with developments?

In Russell's interview with John Campbell I was quite impressed with Campbell's talk of how they often follow up stories later.

How are journalists trained these days? Is it an undergrad degree or diploma? Could the quality of journalism be improved if it were postgrad and would be journalists did a degree in something else first? Would journalists with a BSc do a better job of reporting science? I certainly get the impression that NZ's media would do a better job of reporting China if more NZ journos could speak and read Chinese, and I'm not at all suprised by all the talk on this thread of how the media does such a crap job of reporting their field of expertise.

It’s tempered by her never capitalising the full acronym as PIN

Quick! Somebody phone 'Académie francaise and complain about the creeping frenchification of English!

I can find no actual legal requirement for in this instance WINZ or DSW having to protect your private information if you have been required to provide it.
    ...
If there is no legal requirement for Govt. to adequately protect citizens private information, then why bother?

    Privacy act?
