I'm thinking more along the lines of corruption of vital thought processes, which induce elected representatives to introduce legislation, which allows recidivist downloaders to get away scott free with the warez. To suggest that the labels or copyright holders benefit from this is rather an oversestimation.

mark, I would hesitate to call "corruption" too quickly. You underestimate, I think, the power of legitimate lobbying. As I've said elsewhere, the big companies and industry groups often have people whose only job is to deal with government at all levels. They spend quite a lot of money making sure their message gets across, they turn up to every meeting and bunfight, they get to know the officials and the elected representatives and they flatter them, possibly some wining and dining, ensure that they're called upon to preside at industry events and general warm, happy, fuzzy stuff. It's no surprise that government turns to these people when they want to know something about the industry and get captured, mentally, by the industry mindset.
With complete respect to you Mark, I'll stick with total and utter corruption there, obviously I have no evidence or need to suggest it is of a financial nature. But the instance you just outlined is nothing less than the perfect blueprint for the corruption of democracy by the few. Financial or not.
It's no surprise that government turns to these people when they want to know something about the industry and get captured, mentally, by the industry mindset.

The music industry should really either:
1. suck it up, cut their costs and accept that nobody is going to get rich from recorded music any more
2. find alternative revenue sources that don't require a governmental big stick to workDoesn't look like they're going to be sucking anything up until they've forcefed NZ a full yardy of the shit. in fact it fully looks like they have our government by the strones. I'd like investigations into what kind of corruption is going down to bring about this kind of situation where the government is implementing laws at the behest of a handful of large corporations who've been dicking around our citizens for decades with their format shifts and false promises.
and also with specific reference to local artists. If you're Coldplay or whoever then even a much reduced income from CDs is still a lot of money.
Not if daddy paid close to a million sterling to get you that cushy deal with parlaphone.

I've found after all the hype that I still have a couple of years before this recession hits me and with the spare change I"m thinking of furthering my education. the sound like some good tips.
