true. there are very, very few things that would make me take to the streets in protest.

i've lived in both cities and would choose wellington any day of the week.
i mean, i really, really tried to love auckland, but it was just too hard to live in. i went to many if not all the places graham mentions, and discovered many of my own (anyone else remember kalaloo in kingsland? best burgers i've EVER had).
the place just doesn't 'hang together' like it should. downtown and round vulcan lane used to be promising, but these days whenever i'm in town i ignore all the boutique places and make a beeline for the korean food on upper queen street, ignoring the rest of the city.
it's criminal that our biggest city is so neglected... nice motorway system these days tho.

heh. worked a treat. i was about to launch into a diatribe on the theories of anthony smith and the transformation of those ideas by benedict anderson. it would include a line like, "how can you not understand these things merc! we are your people now!"
then i thought... "don't be such a wanker".

simon is correct AFAIK. although, according to some terribly important scholarly book i once read, german identity did predate the formation of the german state.
not that this should impeded joanna's impending state.

yeah, when i worked in central melbourne i never even considered taking my car, and i lived about the distance of grey lynn to queen st.
as you say, all the extra costs...
actually, even when i lived the distance of titirangi to queen street (in melbourne), i also took the train unless i needed to haul stuff that wasn't train friendly.
once you get used to the idea that cars are often more of a damn hassle than a convenience (parking, traffic, accidents) PT becomes a very friendly option indeed.

it's a catch-22, crap PT means less demand and more cost. so you have to outlay to increase demand, which eventually decreases costs.
OTOH the Link bus service was great initially because it offered a service that other providers did not.
maybe light rail in auckland could do the same.
