  • Hard News: History is now,

you don't think we are a young nation which has yet to find their idealism?

Yes, maybe we're still weaving it. I am confident that it will have a strong pacific flavour, and an unassuming practical one too. Figuring out how to do pramatic idealism may be our ultimate gift..

  • Hard News: History is now,

Thanks, Danielle. And then I went and listened to Obama's poetic power and thought it was just as well I hadn't heard it before I wrote anything.

MLK's dream has always resonated with me, but I had forgotten that other speech. BTW, until embedding is fixed I can't see the clip, so I encourage everyone in the meantime to do what Russell has thoughtfully taken to doing and link some text to it as well.

Didn't 538 do bloody well with their projections - see the matching maps at top right.

  • Hard News: History is now,

I only just caught the end of the Obama speech, and given how heavy that yoke of responsiblity must feel I thought it was damn eloquent.

I am also seriously considering skipping our own campaign fizzer tonight

.. in favour of Campbell Live crossing to the euphoric US of A, of course.

  • Hard News: History is now,

    Wow. Just wow.

MLK quote just took me from lady-like sniffle to full blubber

Heck, me too, Isabel. Wish I'd been here all afternoon in such fine company. God those kiwiblog loiterers are sad bastards. And I am also seriously considering skipping our own campaign fizzer tonight.

I did note one niggle here, questioning the relevance of Reverend King, that other great orator. Craig, the celebratory tone seems perfectly justified from where I sit. Incredibly so.

That's one powerful lineage we're talking about - the struggle of centuries, of slaves and lynchings, of untold thousands of lives sacrificed, of segregated schools and buses, of stirring calls to dream a better future, of riots in Watts and South-Central, of any means necessary, and now being able to see a face like yours in charge - so I'm hoping we can all show some of McCain's grace here, if not MLK's. We surely deserve that as we toast a moment of beautiful triumph.

So bless the French whose struggle also fed the American story, and the Chinese who are part of its future. Break out the bubbles and the giant fireworks. Explosions all round.

Why does it have to be a vege? I quite liked the watermelon idea.

I thought Reiser did always wear a cardie..

  • Hard News: God's squads,

I agree with Tom about nuance, and even lumping different Pasifika ethnic communities into one basket is misleading (much like saying "Asian" is).

It is a welcome sign of progress since the era of dawn raids when those like Su'a William Sio or Mr Lotu-liga find success anywhere on the political landscape.

I note that Lotu-liga isn't actually standing in the south, is he? Though I spose None Tree Hill technically is, from th Shore. :)
