    "From dissension*, envy, hate
    Ladies, please bring a plate"

    "Guard our country's spotless name
    For that grubby mark, I'm not to blame"

    Someone tell me to stop....!
    * what exactly is that?

    It's not like there's a lot of things that rhyme with "Zealand"

    Well, I could offer my surname but that would be impertinent. But in introductions, "I'm Geoff Lealand from New Zealand" always has a satidsfying ring to it.

    Given that one of the threads of conversation here is about violence (Berlusconi getting it in the moosh, and all that), did anyone watch the BBC doco on violence, fronted by Michael Portillo, on TV One last night?

    I gave up on it after 25 minutes, after too many sweeping generalisations about "Human does this...Humans do that...", with nary a mention of the possibility of gender differences in respect of attitudes to, and the deployment of violent tendencies. It was all males doing violence on screen but Michael didn't seem to notice that.

    You could say that about every single thing that the government does or doesn't do.

    I realise that. It is just that the 'mandate' is Tolley's primary defence when she is faced with any criticism.

    The fallacy with Tolley arguing that she has a 'mandate' (her words) to bring in this policy in wake of the election is that I doubt that very many voters were thinking of this particular election promise of last year. Nowhere, on the ballot, is there a proviso that says, " I will vote for you buggers because of this particular election promise" nor " I will vote for you buggers, except for this particular issue".

    Let's hope she has made a big blunder on this one.

    As someone who is petrified of birds, I would like to give Colin some kind of award.

    Well, that bird looks very petrified.

    But I advise you never to visit Port Bodega in Northern California (the setting for Hitchcock's The Birds). As we drove into town, the telephone lines were thick with waiting birds.

    Is there a basic ethic course in NZ schools?

    Not necessarily under such a rubric but the social sciences curriculum in NZ schools certainly deals with ideas that might be described as 'ethical' issues. The Philosophy department at my university provides courses for local schools, pretty much as equivalents of first year courses in ethics. We also co-teach a course on Media Ethics with Philosophy and this works very well.
