  • Hard News: 2011: The Year Of What?,

But I think that what will make 2011 memorable will be some human events, and the Arab Spring, the Chilean student protests, the Wisconsin workers' anger, the Greek riots, and the English uprising (wait for the Tory Party conference protests in Sept) are only the start. But it could come down to the actions of one or two brave people to provide the spark. I think we could see some major 'the emperor has no clothes' moments that will positively change our way of thinking.

Well I would worry about any earthquake at 2 kms deep, which is what the latest 2.0 sized one at Taupo was (in the last 24 hours). And we haven't even considered the Auckland cones.

Don't forget about the disruptive volcanoes around the world, with the latest one currently erupting in Russia, and some worrying shallow earthquakes around Taupo.
Or the environmental fights, such as our own sea battle off the east coast, and growing mass protests around the world to new exploitation such as fracking and today's high profile protest arrests in Washington.

There is a new agey theory that we are in a time of rapid change and are reaping what has been sewn, or karmic accountability, not just individually but collectively. But we are free agents and have a choice whether to act more ethically and respectfully, or more destructively.

2011 has a long way to play out yet.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

It was all over in two minutes flat. The Crown withdrew all charges against Arie and Michael's were withdrawn "on the back" of Arie's. The Judge called it "giving him the benefit of the doubt". Janet McIntyre of the Sunday programme was there and various other cameras and journalists

Great that all charges dropped against Arie. No word about Michael though?

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

I think there is some official embarrassment and puzzlement about the ongoing public interest in all of this. After all many local aspies could probably give you examples of police harassment, including unjustified arrest and incarceration, that never attracted any public concern. I have a psychologist colleague who is constantly busy advocating for autistic people as both victims and defendants in the NZ legal system. (She also says first get a lawyer who understands ASD, which is going to be increasingly difficult under the new legal aid and public defence rules).

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

I think we are all really on the same page here and we are all a bit sensitive about this topic, not just because there are two real people facing great injustice in NZ now, but how close this situation is potentially to some of our own family situations.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie, in reply to Sacha,

I suspect that the Sunday people didn't ask about Michael's plight or the non- association order, and Michael only revealed his own story on the Facebook page later. He seems a very self-effacing person with his main interest in supporting Arie. One of the shocking things about this whole saga is that injustice keeps compounding as more details are revealed.

Good to see that there are several MPs watching this case. Rumours that the announcement about dropping charges will be made on Monday. Latest from GayNZ
