  • Hard News: Moving on, in reply to Russell Brown,

It is indeed amazing what can be made with a relatively small budget. Much better to pay for talent but clearly production tech has got to a point where the barrier to entry is not so great.

I may have missed it but what does a frequency on freeview cost? I can't believe some of what is there but surely there are enough people to put a group together?

OTOH a feed off SBS would be good too.

  • Hard News: Moving on, in reply to Kumara Republic,

So are Internet-capable TVs the solution?

Definitely part of the answer. As I reply to this I am watching some clips off Youtube on my TV. I downloaded them but with Apple TV or an internet connected tv that will happen more often.

I can make video on my mac with s/w that costs just over $100 now. Yes it is better with higher quality cameras & other gear but the webcam is pretty good for online use.

  • Hard News: Moving on,

In looking at the digital channels on freeview there is much dross there but I’m guessing the “channel” still has to be paid for. I’m wondering if one of those channels didn’t have a slot to fill?

Of course you still need a production budget but perhaps there are other broadcast options?

Clearly most commenters here are not employable including myself. Most systems can be gamed - intentionally or not. All very amusing for the most part.

The real elephant in the room is the quality of management at many companies. If in doubt don't join any organisations that play these games unless you can also play them at their own game.

  • Hard News: Game Lorde,

My 12 yr old daughter picked Lorde back in May and she ended up buying a copy of the Ep soon after that. That was driven by mostly by video as the youtube generation talk about that more than actual TV now.

I listened to an interview a few weeks back from last years Jim Mora afternoon radio show and was impressed with what I heard.

It seems like we have a very savvy songwriter / performer on the rise. She appears to have great people in her team and compared to most of the new music out there more than a spark of originality - so all good.

  • Hard News: Jonesing,

Clearly the crew at 3rd Degree have run out of ideas. I didn't watch it so don't know if Shane did his bloke of the people act but it seems likely from reports.

Overall the Labour party at present seems to be populated by invisible mps which lets opportunists like Shane have a crack. Whoever wins will get a crack at PM or oblivion. Labour needs to recover support that has gone elsewhere and until they make a selection its a popularity contest.

  • Hard News: Political Idol, or whatever…,

Labour has a good chance of a decent comeback this time if they get a clean result.

National has had their obligatory 2 turns and I'm afraid the Sky City thing, GSCB, Meridian and a few other general blunders has weakened their appeal to the public ( in my view.) The kim dot com thing as well but maybe not so much by election time depending on the result of the US processes.

Voters are also getting tired of Judith Collins & Paula Bennett not to mention the Fonterra stuff ups under Nathan Guys watch. Nick Smith and Gerry Brownlee are running out of goodwill.

Political memory is short but lets hope this is an opportunity for the Greens and Labour to capture some mindshare with a re-invigorated front bench.

I hope Cunliffe gets the top job because he polarises people and it is his 3rd try at the role. He has shown he can deliver change in previous ministerial roles ( Telecom deregulation) and has some cut through.

Shane Jones is just using the process to build his profile and Grant is unknown outside of Wellington. It would be better if there was a female labour politician in the contest but I can't think of any. I wonder about Lianne Dalziel but she is out of the picture now.

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…,

"It wasn’t so much that he “dished it out”, but that he had the smarts and focus to set up the reform process and see it through. Regulatory reform is massively complex, which is why must governments bail out or do it half-pie."

And that Telco reform was a big win for Labour and a real solid reason of why Cunliffe should get the top job

I hope Cunliffe will step up and that he gets support this time. He is the only one who can stand toe to toe with Key.

  • Hard News: Fluency, ease of manner - and…,

Sadly the "interview" seems to have convinced John Key supporters he is top dog and we are none the wiser.

Faced with the tactics of last night it is easy to see why Campbell was somewhat overwhelmed.

The law society concerns remain valid and we are no closer to a real debate on the subject.

And yes Labour needs to be taking real notes. I think David Cunliffe can foot it with Key but will we ever see him get another chance?
