  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea..., in reply to giovanni tiso,

For some people, particularly women who have done a lot of child rearing and husband looking after, getting National Super is the first time they have had independent money of their own since the end of the family benefit by Bolger's government in th 1990s. So suddenly, they have economic freedom and that leads to the possibility of other freedoms.

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea..., in reply to Damian Christie,

By the time this comes out next Thursday, the media conversation will be over, and Labour will have lost another opportunity. CGT will be “that thing John Key told us was bad.” If I’m wrong, I’ll buy you a beer Russ :)

Sorry, Damian, you can't change the terms after the event. John Key did indeed try to tell everyone it was bad, but even mainstream media people such as John Armstrong noticed he was floundering on this one. And the Nation and your Q and A programme this weekend featured interviews with Labour MPs (Parker and Cunliffe respectively) with commentators asked to respond to it, and they weren't entirely hostile. Personally, I consider that shows both that the media conversation is continuing, and that the idea of a CGT is not dead.

  • OnPoint: It's real, in reply to giovanni tiso,

I agree with you, but he is speaking to an US audience, on economic oppression and not social justice. And the visuals are good. For an NZ audience how about this little chat from the the Spirit Level people?

  • Up Front: P.A. Story, in reply to Sacha,

Sacha, it's not about logic. I found this place on a drive around Governors Bay last year. Was there all of about 10 minutes as driver was in a hurry. The beautiful setting and the exquisite chocolate (I think I bought something Mayan) made an impression and I didn't remember the name except that it hinted at something feminist, and it was Ian D who revealed the details (above). The Facebook page refers to 'sacred chocolate alchemy ' which appeals.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

I didn't realise that Arie's partner, Michael, is also up for sentencing on the 28th. He has already spent 6 weeks in jail, was also allegedly hit on the head by a police woman and spat at by the army. His saw his role as protecting Arie and in all the media and Facebook coverage (which he has also contributed to), he hasn't mentioned his own plight until now.

  • Up Front: P.A. Story, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Ian Dalziel, thank you so much for that link. That is the place, and there are glimpses of the garden in that video clip. But it is not feminist chocolate (which was my assumption from the name), but Spiritual Human Evolution chocolate! And they have a chocolate bus.

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea...,

By the way, Damian, as far as I can see, the media is still talking about this a week after it was leaked (on purpose), so you owe Russell.

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea...,

Most (the biggest numbers of people, or the mode as opposed to the median or the average which are higher numbers) individual people in NZ have an income around $14-$15,000. For that group (which included me this last year) a tax free income of $5000 will make a big difference, as will the GST off fruit and veges.
