It's a strange mix - Hannah's Clearing makes the cut but Lake Hawea doesn't - in fact you can only go half way over the Haast Pass.

On the other hand you can follow almost to the start of the Routeburn Track (we have to get someone to carry google cameras over the great tramping tracks!) - google maps does seem a bit confused about the track itself too

Philip: cutting/pasting google maps from the menu bar just gives your entry to the site (in your case Robyn's link to the stargate in the victoria tunnel) - as mentioned above to have to click the 'link' at the top right to get a link to where you have currently navigated to

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

So I just found myself out in the street with my nice new G1 phone checking out the streetview view (you can hold it up and the compass/orientation/gps allows you to move around in the streetview image) and suddenly thought "what am I doing? I'm looking at my street through my phone when the real thing is right there" suddenly it all seemed quite pointless.

The planetarium program that does the same thing is decidedly cool though

Apparently they still haven't collected my garbage yet, and some kind person has fixed our letter box that was trashed by hoons a few weeks back .....

Seriously though looks like the Dunedin pics were taken about 11 months ago - possibly between Xmas and New Year

  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

we got married for a visa .... 24 years ago .... we tried to do it in secret but we had to have 2 witnesses and one of them couldn't keep their mouth shut .... it was Dunedin, 1.5 degrees of separation - pretty soon people we're coming up to us in the street "I hear you're getting married" .... we had to race the gossip to my parents ... "um we're getting married in 3 days we'd sure like you to come" .... luckily my sister had done the getting married thing first earlier that year so it was sort of out of everyones system .... I tried to get the traditional marriage holiday from my boss at the Uni he wouldn't give it because we got married 'in secret', even though by then everyone in town knew

In the end we had a party at our cottage in Waitati, all the neighbours brought food and drnk, then they washed up, cleaned the house and left

  • Random Play: The Key’s under the Matt,

I was thinking about JK's trip the other day - I can (sort of) understand the trip to Peru, though it did seem a bit off to push his govt on GG before the votes were all counted just so he could go - seeing him on TV in his poncho I couldn't see the point other than that he just wanted to be there with the big boys - it's not like the heads of states at those things do anything other than sign off on what their functionaries have already agreed - in the end it just seemed a bit vain.

I didn't realise he was also going to London as well until it showed up in the press - that part kind of reminded me of a previous age, perhaps Holyoake going off to pay his respects to queen and other country - it just seemed so quaint, something from the newsreels at the movies in my childhood (just after we'd all stood up for the queen - remember when we all used to do that, until enough of those my age just didn't and they stopped showing that film of Liz on a horse to avoid fights).

I'm glad he made that comment about a Republic though - bet it pissed of a certain portion on the Nats though

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

teaching young kids about plagiarism in these internet times is actually really easy - I think my kids got it at 8 or 9 - it's an obvious thing to do if no one tells you it's bad - there's all this great text around on the 'net, why not use it? It's pretty obvious at that age when they 'write' stuff that isn't theirs - I'd sit down with them and grab 3-4 obvious words and plug them into google - every time up would come whatever it was they'd copied - then I'd explain that their teacher could do that just as easily ....

That's when you get to talk about the difference between copying verbatim and rewriting someones ideas in your own words (and quoting and how much of it you can get away with)

I think that because so much wonderfull stuff is available so easily it's part of a modern education to learn how to use it correctly.

As far as Noelle's concerned I'm tempted to be a little charitable - mostly I think she's doing the thing we all do - "I found this neat web site/article check it out" - but she can't just hand you the URL - she should be pointing you to it of course - so she's basically reading it to us - what she should have done of course is what I've been trying to teach my kids about the web: either quote someone, or do it in your own words

Mind you she's kind of screwed whatever she does doing "I found this cool thing on the web" to a large group almost certainly means there's a bunch of people who think "but I saw that on PA last week"

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

I avoid Tylenol/paracetamol/acetaminophen largely because of the liver toxicity - what's especially bad as others have pointed out is mixing it with alcohol which can max out your liver (without going over the recommended dose) and cause real harm.

What's really sad are those who try to suicide by over using it - it doesn't kill you outright gently sinking into oblivion - instead you have a month or two of hell as your liver shuts down and the toxins back up into your bloodstream

  • Hard News: The smart thing to do,

Some of us here in NZ work US hours - it's Thanksgiving a public holiday - scotch, or at least maybe a beer outside on such a lovely morning seems like a great idea .....
