  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

I disagree - unpack those boxes, do more triage - otherwise you end up with a boxes in the hallway for 2 years like we did (just because we can't find somewhere for all my tools doesn't mean I want to throw them away)

Rental shoes? think bowling alley - buy some spray stuff, insist that special shoes must be worn on dance floor, profit!

  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

I have a drawer full of old t-shirts, none of which still fit - but I can't throw them away - I wonder what a 25 year old HART shirt is worth ....

  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

My partner's call to the power company yesterday involved the phrase 'wait a minute, why do you need to know who my next of kin are?'.

I love that, I need to try that some time - perhaps ask them if there's something wrong with their power that causes them to need to call next of kin a lot

  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

Moving back from the US was GREAT! we gave away/threw away so much stuff - we'd moved there at 25 with a suitcase each (OK I mailed my scientific journals too) and came back with half a container's worth - that was after we'd thrown half of it away - it was so hard and in the end definitely worth it

We could never stomach holding a garage, we'd just put anything interesting out on the street - it all went - we eventually invited a couple of neighbours in to pick over the best stuff, one had been quietly setting up her college bound daughter from our footpath

  • Hard News: Rethinking the EFA,

I've always imagined 'ACT activists' as sort of the geeks who the geeks wont hang out with, they've never figured out how to make a decent living, wealth has passed them by and it's sooo unfair - stolen from them by the evil reds - sitting in a bare one-room apartment, a naked light bulb, with a TV on an apple box and another box as a bookcase - 3 volumes of rand is all that's there

(probably I've known too many rabid US libertarians)

But in short furniture's not something they do

  • Island Life: Key and the 'nesians,

You have to be fair - Key may be responsible for us not getting our fibre yet, but I don't think we can blame him for whatever happens in Wellington when you take off your socks

Bevan - thanks for the link - I too was offended - but more because that having just turned 50 I had suddenly being included in NZFirst prime demographic - way to get people to vote for you, tell them they're "old"

James: originally I was more referring to a metaphorical winter of the political soul - predicted by 3 days of actual snow here just prior to election day

I am happily double glazed and batted to the hilt and laugh at the climate change deniers who can't decide if it's getting hotter or colder but do know it isn't doing what the other guys say

Tamsin - I got that same weird letter - I swear John Key wasn't hiding in my cellar - I think they'd outsourced writing that one to some nigerian spammer
