  • Island Life: Bye, bye, you peculiar guy.,

For some reason the recent news (and I have already forgotten where I was) made me this that if the man required that big of a stimulus package to make it through the rehearsals, who knows what would happen when it came to the actual concerts.

But fortunately a 70s rock band has already answered the question:

  • Busytown: Rocky Mountain hi!,

Re the tea-temperature thingy... I looked it up; water at Aspen's altitude (around 8000 ft, I think) boils at about 90 Celsius.

I am not a tea drinker, but I frequently MAKE tea for a certain Public Address blogger, and I do know that it is more appreciated when the water is actually boiling when added to the leaves, so the difference of 10 degrees may indeed make a difference even if can't say why.

I think Douglas Adams would agree, too.

We are driving to Denver over Independence Pass today, which rises a little beyond 12,000 ft -- so we won't be boiling a billy at the top, I guess.

Must admit, wading through the increasingly sordid details of the Worth affair, I am struck by the magnificent understatement of Key's "making a nuisance of himself towards women".

According to my other 'arf, making a nuisance of yourself towards women is leaving the seat up, which -- however reprehensible it might be -- is not usually a matter for the police.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

I am trying to think what you say about Veitch that was defamatory, but worse than what he just pled guilty. It is a pretty short list.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

"If I did anyone wrong, I'm sorry".

He all took a leaf out of the OJ playbook and said he was going to devote himself to find the "real abuser".

I wonder if he is really willing not just to threaten legal action, but to take the stand?

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

    So

Key himself enthused to students in at Waitara College that they would be able to "download a movie in seven seconds".

And just what will the school children be downloading? (not ENTIRELY safe for work)

    @stephen

I am guessing the bunko-bon fraction was not much different when I lived in Tokyo (mid 90s).

And the sleeping. The only people you see sleeping on New York subways are drunks. You could probably turn that into a thousand words of filler on the degree of comfort felt by the average Japanese commuter, relative to their American counterparts, all the while ignoring the sarin-jiken of 1995...

Actually, all this nostalgia for print made me recall the "W fold" -- a skill seemingly possessed by all adult Japanese (and perhaps abetted by the layout people on Japanese newspapers).

It involves taking a newspaper and folding each side longways so that the result is a long thin strip of newsprint that can then be read on the train without inconveniencing your neighbors.

I never quite got the hang of it.

  • Hard News: Just shoot me,

For my money none of the players in this drama sound like very nice people. Russell's analysis seems to assume that there has to be a goodie and a badie -- but why can't the son be an obnoxious and abusive pothead, and the mother be too quick to turn the turmoil her family suffered into fodder for a book?

Well, I must admit when I saw the "Please keep cell phone conversations, brief, quiet and child appropriate" sign that had sprouted on the door of Bank Street Books (a truly excellent children's bookstore on the Upper West Side) this weekend, I was forced to wonder precisely WHAT incident had caused the staff to print this up and attach it to their door.
