  • Hard News: Idiotic and lamentable behaviour,

Key's mismanagement has probably lost him some of the political capital he developed having worked the Smacking compromise and I wonder too if it doesn't herald (sorry couldn't resist) the end of his ultra-long media honeymoon?

By appointing a leader with so little parliamentary experience, National took a real risk - albeit somewhat hedged by English - and this is the outcome. Worse still, in an effort to look pragmatic, Key's flip-flopping merely reminds us of Brash.

  • Hard News: Here and There,

I was not a fan of Thorne during the last cup, I remember his captaincy being (thankfully) usurped by Justin Marshall during the game against Wales and thinking 'about time'. But since then, and also based on some of Tracey's analysis, I've realised how effective he is in his position.

Re Fox, I completely agree with rogerd's comments.

  • Hard News: Here and There,

Agreed. Tracey Nelson knows more about rugby than I ever will. She moonlights from her bug-scientist job to be the live stats person for the radio commentary from Jade Stadium, and she's occasionally on Press Box. But still, buffoons like Stu Wilson get the big jobs ...

Well said RB. Nelson's analysis is fantastic and a much more useful aide to the game than the rantings of some former players. Interestingly she's a long time fan of Ruben Thorn(e)...

For all those that don't like the pay-tv commentary, you could always listen to the rugbyroundtable's commentary (with the dropkicks, the best rugby podcast/commentators around)

  • Hard News: The People's Choice,

Totally late to the thread, missed the iterations on issue(s), but want to add my congrats. PA is my default forum for NZ news. Only sorry I couldn't make your fundraiser ealier this year.

Alex, I'm really enjoying half of your posts.

  • Speaker: Part 20: Number 57, your time…,

Ahh Hamish, another great piece. Our nation's love affair with the triers - a country of Cortinas rather than Lamborghinis.

I agree to a point, the class of Bond and Vettori exert the pressure that enables Styris to be frustrating and the class of Fleming and Taylor has to set up our innings for Macca etc.

  • Speaker: Part 19: Beating Sri Lanka,

    Wot Bingle Said too!

NZ's more than capable of winning the Cup, the win against RSA clearly showed that. We're too used to being there or thereabouts and not winning - Australia can come undone when subjected to sustained pressure and are struggling with their bowling line-up and Sri Lanka, as Grant says, can be beaten through early aggression against Murili.

A good allround win against Sri Lanka will give us the confidence to go after the Aussies (many of whom have hardly had a bat in the tournament).

  • Stories: Life in Books,

...There is no poetry of the EMO kind, I will not let that meme stick...

    Well said Merc.

A fantastic book, and one that tuned me into thinking about what an anarchic society might look like, and the extent to which we might replace external institutions of control with internal social mechanisms of control.

I was 16 when I read this book in seventh form English. It was a prelude to studying politics at Uni and I re-read it annually before forgetting it for ages until a year or so back. I love the structure of the book, the parallel stories exploring/synthesising political theory while both progressing the protangonists story and explaining his history.

  • Stories: Life in Books,

With a couple of friends I used to smoke with at the Wailing Bongo

The Wailing Bongo! OMG! Did you ever call it the Wailing Bong? I did.

    OK, back to the books.

That'd be the Wailing Bong and Transcendental Meditation Centre thanks very much...

Late to the party but I'd add Le Guin's (mentioned earlier in the thread) The Dispossessed - caricature PolSci or Stead's Smith's Dream.

And in a pitch for poetry of a less Emo-kind, how about e e cummings she being brand new... (or if Emo is you're thing, since feeling is first)
