  • Hard News: The Commercial Crunch,

Hmmm! Advertising--that great mix of pseudo science and 'orrible hucksterism. One question I have always wanted to ask an adman: when TVCs make the claim '30% larger' or "13 % percent longer" or 'new and improved"--effing larger or longer or newer than what???

  • Hard News: The Commercial Crunch,

    Stacy Jones? Oh, her -
she was in my class at school.
    Wait, that's someone else.

    WINNER!

    I second that!

    To continue this oblique theme:

    Gavin and Stacey?
    A different relationship
    I think.

    The Little General
    Not a good description
    Better, The Giant Killer

Sounds a bit feeble, I know. I could more easily sing the praise of Siti, Richard, Mils, Sione, Brendan, Stephen, Leila, Alan, Callum etc etc

  • Hard News: Problems,

On Iceland: I am setting an assignment for my students on the Icelandic film industry , which has produced 60 feature films since 1978 (from a population base of 309,000). They are asked to make comparisons with the film output of another small nation (NZ, Algeria, Denmark etc). I realise I should probably put a rider on this topic, as Icelandic film-making has probably gone down the toilet.

On a completely different track: what was that final score in the Blues vs Chiefs game on Saturday again?

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

I found the guy from Unitec quite impressive, myself.

That is Peter Thompson. He does know his stuff and was responsible for coordinating the review of the TVNZ Charter last year. The kind of academic I like, who gets engaged in public debates. Brian Edward---hmmm?

I remember the day Lennon was shot. I remember thinking "God, why couldn't you have taken Ringo instead?"

..and I was thinking, "Why not Paul instead?"

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

a whole lot of slightly past it, backslapping insiders who are resting on their laurels

I am not sure what Tom wants us to be slapping instead. The thing about Hard News--and it has been quite an education for me--is that is has revealed a whole new intellectual community to me. I usually move amongst academics, who think they know everything about everything. But this ain't so--there are times on Hard News (and PA generally) when I am in awe of the breadth of knowledge and intelligence of analysis.

    So there, Tom!

  • Stories: Hotels,

Paper darts, or the spiky pub kind?

Papers darts--but the pub kind might have attracted more attention.

On the local front, the Princeton Towers in Symonds Street are pretty 'orrible. Stayed there so my daughter could cosplay at Armageddon. After the first night, we had 23 bath towels, in a soggy heap, attempting to sop up the overflow from the shower.

  • Stories: Hotels,

Maybe once in Paris in 2004. The sink drained directly on to the floor, and there was a window problem: leave them open, to reduce the overpowering mouldy odour but this mean't that small flocks of pigeons flew indoors. The poor Canadians, two floors down, were completely flooded out. But our children found it all very exciting--especially firing darts at the school-ground seven stories below.
