Joe Bennett weighs in on the ABs...

    "Grace under pressure"

In this song is a point, of sorts.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated, in reply to Sacha,

I would have been happy to see Loe cop a life ban for persistent thuggery.

One thing I thought, although in this context it may seem odd, is the incredible discipline shown by both teams overall on Sunday. Apart from the SBW moment of course, which we won't mention.

Did I here someone say 'showboating?' Oops.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated, in reply to BenWilson,

    Richard Loe, right?

O Sensei, he say "First, smash the eyes"

I caught a pre match interview with Low, and he did use the word 'smash' far more times than was necessary. Probably doesn't contribute much to the impression many people have of the game.

Then again, saying the players 'smashed into each other' is not an entirely inaccurate description, with the ABs losing the most 'claret' as a result.

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v Wallabies Tensionfest, in reply to Rich Lock,

It wasn't the ref that made those kicks miss.

No, it was the commentator's curse. Every time Nisbett (think it was him) said how important the kick was, he missed.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated,

    The science of superstition.

Keith Quinn warns us via Teh Herald

"Being overconfident could seep into the bones, into the psyche, of the nation and even the All Blacks."

It's a funny thing this impression we have that what we do, as both individuals and a collective, could have an influence on the outcome of the game. Perhaps it could. The whole 'Weepu's got this' meme was a laugh, but did it start to play on his mind, increase his nervousness, and affect his game? Not as much as the passing of his Grandfather or the onset of the flu I would wager, but still, you never know.

Then again it is this superstitious irrationality that stopped me posting Black Sabbath Iron Man on Sunday, had me telling the commentators to 'shuddup' every time Weepu was taking a kick, and is making me ridiculously nervous about the whole French resistance. (War analogy unintended). We should win this easily. But would I bet my house on it? Not today, but then I haven't read the astrological charts or consulted the cow so I'll have to get back to you.

Insert long explanation of the failings of my earlier post. Such as the lyrics actually saying 'yeah, it's just a bitch'. Ain't life a fish? Link restored from the void.

To mock is indeed a sin, or to con nan even more so, but among friends, it is Forever Dolphin Love.

  • Hard News: Where are the foreigners?!, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

I still have a soft spot for The Middle East Café on Wellesley Street. The Chawarma was always a pre or post movie favourite in the late 80s. Haven't been for a while, but their menu indicates nothing much has changed in 20+ years. Mostly nostalgia probably, but Fatima's is the only other place I can think of that does Chawarma like that, and it's how I like it best.
