  • Busytown: A Thought Went Up My Mind,

Ian, another Brewster McCloud fan? About my second favourite movie of all time after Harold and Maude which I recently re-watched, and it is still excellent.

I'm enjoying the haiku and poetry, thanks everyone.

Giovanni, careful with your insults of Coleridge. My father always claimed he was ancestral whanau (not quite sure of the link but I think he had at least one sibling who had children).

  • Random Play: Fiji #2: The Times, they…,

My sister and her family spent several years there and her children went to school there and speak Fijian. She was heartbroken by the first coup and came back to NZ soon after, but still has connections there. Seems like times are tough for the locals, and difficult for anyone to speak out at all. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn't consider a holiday there now - although I would like to visit again some time when things are more politically stable, and safer.

New Zealand could help by letting ordinary Fijians, with no connections to the military, come here to work, such as in the short staffed aged care sector. That would help us and help poor families back there.

  • Great New Zealand Argument: No Fretful Sleeper,

We never paid attention to her poetry, but after she died we realised she had been published occasionally since the late 1930s, totally unappreciated by her family. There is a clutch of them in Landfall around 1979-1980 and others scattered over the decades. After she died, we published a book, Green Tea, of what we liked most.

  • Great New Zealand Argument: No Fretful Sleeper,

I inherited an almost complete run of Landfall, 1947 to 1997. Lovely to dip into, and occasionally I find a poem of my mother's. Just checked on the first issue from 1947 and it's obviously been much read over the years, as it is now coverless and a bit tatty. Islander, I'm sure you're better condition.

  • Great New Zealand Argument: No Fretful Sleeper,

Wow, Noel Hilliard was your teacher! The first two Netta Samuel books were probably my earliest introduction to adult NZ fiction, discovered when I was a young teenager. I was very surprised to later discover Noel was not himself female.

  • Southerly: Since You Asked,

Blonde bobs, turned up collars, maybe chunky pearls - I thought that was a Khandallah Wadestown sort of thing that you learnt at private girls' schools. The junior version is a blonde pony tail.

  • Southerly: Since You Asked,

My father was called Nigel and went to Christs College. I could take offence.

  • Up Front: Bonging Science Doughnut Time,

    Giovanni, you are so kind.

Sorry about the rave and I've covered the topic before, but someone upthread wondered what people who want to do something in such times, can do for others. That was my experience from a long time ago. I would never have guessed the therapeutic value of a family of Barbies (one which got named Klaus).
