  • Hard News: Auckland's future: Keep calm,…,

the elephant in the room is of course we should pay for the much needed infrastructure and the like by selling off assets

  • Speaker: Not even a statistic, in reply to Danielle,

Let’s teach some men to do stuff for a change.

Is there anything males need to be taught, other than to just Stop?

  • Hard News: Auckland's future: Keep calm,…, in reply to Sacha,

There's a huge promised investment in wasteful roading projects. Those are propped up by govt 'loaning' its national transport agency and co-funder extra money to bring some of them forward. Except the one project that does need to be ready in time to avoid the region's public transit networks seizing up. And local maintenance and operations which govt has been stealthily shrinking its share of.

which suggests the easiest immediate thing one can do to help with the cities problems are to change the govt

  • Hard News: Dotcom: Further news of the unlikely, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Is it me, or is the whole Anglosphere seemingly going down that path?

You're not alone.... naked greed coupled with a complete lack of morals or even the hint of common decency

good times ahead, given the problems we collectively face

  • Hard News: Dotcom: Further news of the unlikely, in reply to Chris Waugh,

Far enough - my point was the seriousness of the crime might determine the co-operation, or at least the level of, something that doesn't seem to be an issue here to our "star struck" officials - "omg its the FBI"

  • Hard News: Dotcom: Further news of the unlikely, in reply to Russell Brown,

Possibly because this wasn’t a simple extradition case, it was an investigation employing the full apparatus of state. Would the Chinese conduct electronic surveillance on behalf of the US and share the results the way we did?

Perhaps they would, depending on the allegations - the question needs a bit of rephrasing - would the Chinese do so over such a seemingly minor raft of charges, I doubt it... something significant that effected both nations security, most likely

We already know NZ do just about anything currently to please the US and will change our spy laws when our spies can't operate legally...

  • Hard News: Dotcom: Further news of the unlikely,

this was always a story that had more legs than a creepy crawly thing... if the Prime Minister has, as many believe, been less than honest about his knowledge of Dotcom I bet he and his strategists are rueing the day they decided to hunker down and hope it would all blow over

I believe Mr Gower would trumpet this as a potential game changer... of which I am sure there is plenty more to come

What a sorry affair this entire thing is and continues to be

  • Hard News: Going solar?,

We're keen to invest in solar at home in some form given the ever increasing power prices

Hadn't planned on doing anything until after the election due to the Greens Solar Power in Homes policy which might be a real thing sooner than later (https://www.greens.org.nz/solarhomes) - which at worst should see the setup/install costs reduced

  • Hard News: Friday Music: F**kYouTube, in reply to Russell Brown,

Seems that way to me too, which is why I'd really like to see some more details

I can't help but wonder if like so many before them (refer big retail, other digital platforms et al) they've decided that due to the huge number of indies its all just a bit too hard, especially for automated systems given the huge volume of music from so many diverse sources... negotiate with the big indies, of which this could all be but an opening gambit, and they can then ignore the rest

I can imagine someone at Youtube HQ reading all the spotify payment articles of which their have been hundreds from generally indie artists and labels and thinking "fuck em" we'll just not have them aboard our streaming service

  • Hard News: Friday Music: F**kYouTube, in reply to Grant McDougall,

Things have been a bit fiddly for indie bands in Youtube for a while, but this will just make things worse.

Weirdly or not... Youtube has over the past 18 months become a whole lot more user friendly for labels and artists down here and I assume globally

The Nun/Warners thing isn't unique.. bloody frustrating for those who just want to see/hear the music. and the artists themselves

It can be very hard (understatement) to reclaim and change settings to material already claimed by someone else - especially when ownership can be complicated. Something I thought was getting cleaned up and made more user friendly by youtube and rights holders themselves
