  • Stories: Love,

When doing historical research you are sometimes lucky enough to discover a gem. A few years ago I was researching the life of Janet Fraser, wife of Prime Minister Peter. Janet and Peter had one of those devoted and successful political and personal partnerships, having had to wait for Janet's divorce from her first husband before they could marry in 1918.

Janet's granddaughter, actress Alice Fraser, showed me a letter Peter had written to her father Harold (Peter's stepson), on Janet's death in 1945.

Dear Harold, This note is a very sad one. In fact the saddest I have ever written. Words are not adequate to express my sorrow or to indicate what the departure of your mother means to me. She passed away peacefully ... Her passing was just like the running down of a clock, gently to the end. About an hour and a half before she died, she said "Goodbye: Goodbye everybody", and her last words were to me, uttered when she was very weak, "Darling, I am all right..."

  • Busytown: Holiday reading lust,

I, too, love getting those boxes from Amazon (though might try the Book Depository now, thanks Philip). The lowness of the $NZ for the last year has meant I hadn't had any for a long time.

But my recently arrived treats are 'Autism and the Myth of the Person Alone' by the controversial Doug Biklen (many psychologists hate his work on facilitated communication), 'Autism and representation' with chapters by my favourite social constructionists, and 'The ethics of Autism'.

Probably not top of most people's reading lists, however.

I love the intense red on green of pohutukawa on a sunny blue day.

  • Stories: Love,

Anyway, now that school's out, I'm finally going to write a kind of update to that speech for the Humans site.

    Yay!

(I'm meeting with the Ministry of Ed people to get The Truth about standards, and I'll report on that sometime too)

Mr Mark: You might have to bow to Giovanni's expertise on all things Milanese. The Berlosconis were probably his neighbours.

Kyle: I know that house, and street. Great views and a just a short walk down to the gardens and university. In Wellington terms it is almost innercity. Access road Fee Street does occasionally ice up in winter snow storms, but not for long. I know someone who will be very pleased to hear that there are some nice neighbours moving in.

Efficient and fast light rail from Palmerston North to the Wellington airport and port could be built with that money. Means the new capital of Palmerston North (Craig) could still have easy access to the rest of the world.

And while the long awaited new trains on the same route will not have toilets as that is too expensive.

It is just me that finds it very depressing that billions of dollars is to be spent on big roads - without local access on and off ramps - across the Wellington region, through the last of the coastal wetlands, into earthquake fault country too steep for trucks, and through a city which will largely be under water at high tide with just a one metre sea level rise, which is likely in only a few decades unless we stop using cars.

Has anyone mentioned the strange Government decision to stop the 'It's not OK' campaign? Apparently, we are domestically peaceful now.
