  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

right-leaning newspapers that endorsed Bush four years back

shades of the 1997 UK election....all the major UK papers deserting the tories like rats off a sinking ship.

re: Colin Powell - while generally agreeing with you, I personally find it very difficult to forgive him for the part he played in the run-up to the current Iraqi mess.

  • Up Front: Just Answer the Question,

    Stormfront.org doesn't sound very SFW

Rule of thumb: Any website with 'storm', 'honor/honour', 'blood', 'shield' or similar in the title should be avoided in the same way that any political party with 'family' in the title should be avoided.

    Tamaki Drive?

That was what I thought, too.

    I also thought:

"cause it just belongs to you and me [an unacceptable situation which post-election will be remedied by the implementation of a plan to have it taken into private ownership, with ongoing maintenance and infrastrucutre costs covered by a public-private partnership agreement, of which the risk component of the financial aspect will be borne by the taxpayer].

  • Up Front: Just Answer the Question,

And yet the general consensus seems to be that it's 'okay'

Probably because it would be drawing a really, really long bow to suggest that gingers are currently disadvantaged or discriminated against in any serious way. Whereas there is still ample evidence of anti-semitism, racism, etc.

It's all about the power dynamic. Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen can make jokes that I simply can't.

So, for what it's worth, I think Hadyn's reply to Q2 should have been:

"The gingers. They must be exterminated from the face of the Earth".

Shock value, the appropriate dollop of ridiculousness (no-one seriously thinks gingers are a 'race', which neatly flags up the lunacy of the concepts of racism/anti-semitism), and a thick layer of insulatve protection from critism, from his own natural colouring.

  • Hard News: The odds, and the simply odd,

"but if he's in the passenger seat, who's driving?"

    Oh the passenger
    He rides and he rides
    He looks through his window
    What does he see?
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the citys ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
cause it just belongs to you and me
So lets take a ride and see whats mine

    And he sings:

"blah blah blah blah blahblahblah blaah"
"blah blah blah blah blahblahblah blaah"

(with many apologies to Iggy Pop)

  • Hard News: Rationalisation is at hand!,

Rich, I didn't get the impression from the clip that he was expecting it - but given how low these guys will stoop for power, you're probably right.

I should probably make it clear that i haven't seen the clip or read the commentary - all I was doing was throwing up a hypothetical interpretation for discussion.

However, the comments in this thread seemed (in my opinion) to get a little side-tracked onto what the audience member did or didn't say. Not the point.

To my mind, the two important questions are:

    1) What did it actually say in the campaign leaflet to which Russell refers?

    2) If it actually uses the words 'arab terrorist', who authorised it (how far up the tree can that one be traced)?

She didn't get a chance, to McCain's credit.

So the campaign office distributes flyers containing the smears, and McCain gets to rebut them and look like a decent and honourable chap who's above all of that dirty low-blow fighting.

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

Sarah Palin takes the Voight-Kampff test

Do you think she'd shoot the guy under the table a la Bladerunner?

My mother? Let me tell you about my mother.....

when you are about to lose your house it suddenly doesn't matter as much if the other guy is black.

I was really struck by this piece on the BCC the other day:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/gavinhewitt/2008/10/race_is_still_an_issue.html

Yes, race is an issue. but I'm beginning to think if that guy they interviewed is indicative of how people are thinking (if...), then it's going to be a landslide (jinx).

  • Hard News: "Rubbish" is putting it politely,

If that's the take on Mozart that you're content with, hey, don't worry, be happy.

I'm quite happy for pop culture to teach me everything I need to know. Ahhh, television: teacher, mother, secret lover.

    And thanks for asking.

Rich, the argument espoused to justify copyright is that if there's no money in it people won't create. I'm calling bullshit. You'll point to a Mozart, who had a rich patron (but still got shafted in the end). I'll point to a Van Gough, who survived on his brother's charity, and it's only now, long after his death, that his works change hands for sums that could pay off the national debt of a small African nation.

I wouldn't actually argue otherwise - I think we're agreeing more than we disagree.

I know a few artistic types (they're generally harmless, but I don't ever make the mistake of turning my back on them :) ). They are driven to 'do it' for the love of doing it, in a way I'll never understand.

But...They do still need to put food on the table and a roof over their heads - as you've pointed out, Van Gough basically sponged off his brother so he could live the life he wanted to/was driven to.

So are we arguing whether copyright should exist at all, or are we arguing about duration?
