  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Key and Goff's whole relationship reminds me of Muldoon & Rowling. When Muldoon drawled "I think I've just been mauled by a mouse" it didn't matter what Rowling said, how relevant it was, or what use it might have been in the running of a country: the swing voters simply weren't interested.

Same with Goff: his policy regime all year has been nothing but nettles grasped and elephants in the room addressed. Do they care? Apparently not.

What gets me is how any government in NZ, 2011 can get any support at all for the prospect of selling assets.

  • Hard News: Ante Up,

Nice analysis. Isn't there another option (or part option)? The public broadcasting fee. Or is that just another nettle to grasp in our bloodied mandibles.

I wonder, then, how you vote? National, Labour, or one o' dem noo fangled smaller parties that are only now starting to manifest in the electoral awareness of their supporters' children?

  • Hard News: We interrupt this broadcast ..., in reply to David Cormack,

In '08, one of the great media moments for the greens was opening up "vote for me" to the public to submit whatever image they wanted. 20,000 submitions, squished into a single page ad, almost 100%: people's kids.

I doubt, however, that election campaigns are how a large portion of the nation makes up their minds on who to vote for

Family tradition is quite a lot of it, especially for Labour and National voters.

  • Hard News: The new riot reporter,

Next thing she'll be calling for the printing presses, the TV stations, and the radio broadcasters all to be closed down. All phone lines (besides those belonging to gummint), of course, should be suspended. The Internet itself should be turned off for a while. A curfew would help too. The government could stop wasting time in those bloody debates, and - while we're at it - let's get rid of elections. There's such a thing as too much communication, y'know.

    Dubai of the Pacific

Not sure what they're getting at, other than a financial hub? Which the PM - being, y'know, that way inclined - has mentioned off and on.

Isn't it some sort of facilitating ultramassive biz transactions, via a micro tax rate on temporary deposits that only stick around for a few days while mega transactions get worked through, and which wouldn't otherwise be handled by NZ?

Either that, or someone's got crazy landscaping planned for the harbour.

We might find the noisy celebration of a killing distasteful

Yep. Probably for the same reason that I find the death sentence distasteful.
