  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Kumara Republic,

The reports quoted pre-date the removal of Ecan . Islander is right in that the post-earthquake butt-covering is world-class when it comes to the various councils.

Joel Cayford’s revelatory posting from last July.

I'm lost for every word except the short pithy ones. Cayford appears to say neither Ecan nor CCC did a proper hazard management plan, except to shovel responsibility on to the other council. A monumental scandal if true.

At the risk of becoming a single-issue poster(ior), I have been having a nose around the Royal Commission into the Earthquakes website, just because I'd like to know what the learned are saying without the filter of a journalist and his/her deadlines and word limits. http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/
The submissions are available printed and on video.

One that caught my eye today and seems very under-reported is this: http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/documents-by-key/20111003.24 I haven't seen any analysis of this submission by Rachel Ford and Ed Radley, and I don't understand the technical bits well enough to draw conclusions, so I'd be interested to read comments from someone who can sort the wheat from the chaff.

Meanwhile, quake theme tours for meathead media.

I'm thinking a Sun screamer here: "GONER"

How about an IED under the Grand Chancellor with a special private, up-very-close viewing for the chosen ones.

Yes these ideas are great; even Fran O'Sullivan gets it. What's rankling with lots of people on Christchurch of all political hues is the hseer bloody unfairness of the poor old bat in Bexley with her hard-won, low -value home not being able to buy anything because the Nasty-ional Party donors have bought up land and are ratcheting up the asking prices.

Following from the previous posts about the Christchurch Labour MPs, why isn't the Labout Party all over this? Because the party's earthquake spokesman, the Mikealike Cosgrove is not in Goff's gang so can't get any support from him and the local Labour MPs have always been a dysfunctional family. Brownlee and Key are shutting out anyone not on the right; consensus and informed decision-making for the city rebuild is a huge sick joke. I guess that Roger Sutton is being swamped with info to keep him busy for a few months.

The labour MPs are all working themselves ragged on the day-to-day post quake hideousness and getting sweet FA from the party hierarchy who seem to regard the seats as a shoo-in. They will be surprised at how their party vote collapses here; voters will hold their noses and tick Nastional; many more than last time will go Green. The Labour MPs should mostly make it back because there is respect for their individual (note not party) efforts in the last year.

And nothing will change here. The council and leadership vacuum is as dreadful as always. My hunch is that the flight out of town will intensify next year and the year after. I had been feeling optimistic about the rebuild, but seeing how lacking the Govt's deal with the insurers is, I'm now very, very cautious. This city could well fail.

Fecklessness? Using P in a couple of hours off from caring for your premature baby twins is not ignorance, carelessness, or stupidity. It is addiction ; which is the "untold" but often mentioned story of both the parents.

I believe the Canterbury Law Society is offering some post-quake help, not sure to whom and how much; you could check out them.

An arrangement where a group of people with old houses "create" their own subdivision and relocate the houses to the land?

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Jen Hay,

A private land sale will be the way around the convenants. And would you really want to live in Stepford subdivision even in your beautiful house? If it were me, I would identify areas I wanted to live in and put 'land wanted' ads in the local gathering places like supermarkets, newspaper, or even better the butcher's window if they will allow it. If it's country you're after, an ad in the local CRT newsletter or Fed Farmers mag. Or even Older and Bolder. All cheap and may turn up something.
