  • Hard News: Out of the Box,

    Another Assange quote outlining why he does what he does;

    There cannot be good governance without good information given to good people. It's impossible in a democracy. Physicists [Assange was trained at University of Melbourne in physics] look at extreme circumstances to understand a situation. The extreme situation of ignorance would be if everyone was deaf, dumb and blind tomorrow. Each person could not communicate with other people. Every form of society would collapse in an instant — democracies, monarchies and dictatorships alike. But if we look in the other direction and ask what if we maximized the reliable, verified information about how the world is working. Then we start to produce more sophisticated and intelligent structures that respond to the abuses in societies and also the opportunities there may be in society.

    Not sure he's 'all that', but he's moving towards it.

  • Field Theory: Who says chivalry is dead?,

    Yes yes, must adhere to unwritten rules about not taking advantage of a competitors poor equipment selection/mechanical sympathy/competence... it's just not on, and I'd hate to win because I 'cheated'.

    Now, where did I leave those performance enhancing drugs?

  • Hard News: Rousing Auckland,

    On a probably unrelated note... I received a letter drop from the local MP (Maungakiekie) which is a 'survey'.

    The survey to be returned has my name and address on it - presumably from the electoral (t)roll. The questions are fairly leading, and include asking who I would vote for if an election were held today.

    "The information is being collected by [the MP] in his capacity as a member of parliament to be used for the electorate and related activity"

    ?related activity?

    I't s come from the National Party presumably, though the house of representative's seal is also present.

  • Hard News: Dude, what just happened?,

    With my shonky eyes, I first read this:

    The answer to the ennui of life is not soma.

    as

    The answer to the emu of life is not soma.

    Which in some ways made more sense.
