But every newspaper promotes a narrative – a large proportion of the articles in the Herald/Press/Dom Post are othering, uncritical presentation of government initiatives, promotion of celebrity lifestyles and politics-as-sport.

It's a strange thing - if I remember correctly the Worth Affair was handled similarly by Key when it blew up, but the media never questioned his leadership. There has been grumblings within the Labour caucus with the way Goff handled this, but I haven't heard any of them saying he should go. But that hasn't stopped the media continuing the refrain that Goff is under threat. They have even talked to Carter who isn't in the party anymore. Goff doesn't strong-arm the government like he should but that's the nature of the guy. Anyway. I can't think of anyone in the present caucus who could.
OK, he made mistakes in handling this issue especially when it broke, eg. not informing Little, but I believe Labour has been working hard to provide alternative policies to the current set that has NZ sliding towards oblivion. Whether kiwis are listening, or allowed to listen, is another thing.
But when you have Mr Smile'nWave headlining TV news with a significant package for ChCh reconstruction from a private bank, but invisible at the ChCh-losing-RWC-games announcement, I just think Goff/Labour have a hard job just now breaking through the blue smoke-screen that pervades NZ media currently.

Yeah, my mother operated one of those machines in the 'Little Hut', an infamous little Dunedin coffee shop (not a 'cafe' in those days) back in the early 60's. And you know what, it did a roaring trade!

We have had the Aussie whanau over to catch up with the rest of the family. 30 sat down for Xmas dinner at Lake Hood, 10 of whom followed us down to Tarras. We were busy eating, drinking, cutting wood, eating, drinking ..... It was wonderful.
The weather is so unusual this time round. We have had nearly 150ml rain over a 2 week period which has turned the landscape nearly green, remarkable for this time of the year. But I hear sunshine is just round the corner, but I'll be stuck in my room working from now on. -
I'm sure there are great managers and business owners out there. But NZ doesn't seem over-endowed with them. Considering we consistently rate as one of the best places on the planet to do business, business itself looks like the weak link in our low-wage/low-productivity economy. (Farming generally, and importantly, excepted.)
I couldn't agree more! But I include the meat & wool sectors amongst the retards.
Successive governments have done all they can to increase productivity but it still won't budge. Why? I just don't think our private sector managers are up to it. My recent dealings with a couple of large corporates leaves me in despair. -
Our summer has been typically windy Nov/Dec, but since mid Jan it has been wonderful with hot days (30+C) and very little wind. I expect it to continue like this till mid April. But we live in a very dry climate and the locals are really crying out for moisture, any moisture will do.
But having bought a new BBQ and having people stay, its been great to cook, drink and saviour the landscapes and warmth. Typical CO summer!
Also got a couple of new toys to play music etc but haven't got the desire to follow the music scene like other posters here.

Whether we like it or not, currently NZ just wants to be governed by a popular, essentially do-nothing government. What I mean is there are many hard issues facing us now but we simply don't want to apply our minds to them.
Key certainly doesn't want to stray much beyond 'party central', and Goff believes there is no appetite for any worthy issues to be debated even if the electorate was listening to him.
It is quite sad, but hopefully we might get out of this stupor before it is too late.

If I was a doctor how would I do that? Cut consultations from 15 minutes to 10 minutes or 5 minutes? Ration drugs? Get rid of the charge nurse?
I don't think you have to go that far, but even a 1 min improvement over a 15 min consultation would be worthwhile. That could be achieved by, for example, dictating notes directly into computer instead of typing, e-notes/results instead of paper and scanning.
Thing that gets me though, many 'experts' have been advising us over many years, whom we have largely ignored. Also, I see Oram laying considerable blame at the feet of business directly and govt has a somewhat limited role beyond skills training, tax incentives. All of which of course, was established by the previous govt and gutted by this one.
Now we can only wait for the privatization agenda to be spelt out by Brash & Co.

Enlightening responses, thanks. My wife and I sat through the interview and wondered why, we couldn't understand it.
But I just wonder what are we doing to our kids when they cannot say to themselves 'I'm in a bad space here, I'm leaving', whatever that situation may be.
