  • Hard News: Friday Music: I like your old…,

It’s months since Princess Chelsea let bFM have a copy of her cover of the song to play, and then released it as a 7” vinyl single. Well, now there’s a video.

    And it’s sensational:

No-one has mentioned it yet...it certainly is sensational video. It's also a very 'busy' video requiring return visits to catch the nuances. For anyone in Chch region, be sure to catch Lawrence Arabia and his chipper gang in the seaside settlement of Ohinehou tonight @ the Wunderbar. Drive up with great care through the picturesque Heathcote Valley and the country's longest road tunnel (@ 6,460 feet) to get there!

  • Hard News: Friday Music: I like your old…, in reply to Robert Fox,

I’ve only seen the Fall twice (back in the Early 90’s) and both shows were exceptional, however viewing footage of more recent show’s I’d have to say that Mr Smith may be spent as a live performer.

They certainly were back in the day. I was fortunate to catch a Brix-era gig in Cardiff in '88. The Martin Bramah (part II) 'era' 1989-90 was especially worthy for the release of Extricate, one of the Fall's finest. Sing Harpy and its warped Kenny Brady fiddle is I gather a dig at (Nigel) Kennedy for running off with Brix! Extricate also featured the rediscovery of the long lost Monks (Black Monk Themes I and II). I'm pretty sure Bramah (along with keyboardist) Marcia Schofield) got dumped on the eve of Fall's Akl'd visit in 1990 and NZ audience unfortunately missed a real treat.

Agree, I think Mark E Smith has run out of steam but you can never say never with the Fall. How about a line-up change (...hello Craig Scanlon?) the current one must hold the record for longevity.

Interestingly, The Fall never did a Reed/VU track but did do the Saint's This Perfect Day on the Marshall Suite. The closest to a Velvet's cover was White Light(ning)!

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to Hebe,

I heard Bill Hodge from Auckland University outline yesterday in an interview with Sean Plunket on Radio Live saying that should Len Brown resign before being sworn in, then Palino would become mayor. I imagine it wouldn't be in Auckland's best interests for that to happen given what has been unleashed from the right. I imagine if it comes to a point that Len Brown leaves office, then it would be after the swearing in - which would then allow Penny Hulse to become mayor.

I too hope Peter Jeffries doesn't make this a one off, no interest in Palmer but Peter oh my!

I recall seeing at another defunct (for now anyway) venue (the old Dux de Lux), Roy Montgomery, Dribbling Darts of Love and Peter Jeffries on the same bill. Nothing beats Electricity on a good day!

And Russell, great overview of the Gladstone! It certainly was a bit rough at times late in the early '80s with the bootboy contingent often intimidating and looking for 'action'. On a much brighter note, the Saints (sans Ed Kueeper) really came alive in closing their set with Know Your Product.

BTW is Graeme Jeffries still active with the Cakekitchen?

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Partners in Vacancy,

Aah, Crazy Horses, the Osmonds' One Good Apple! Apparently the song was making an environmental statement, referring to air pollution from cars. Can't imagine though they were driving about in 1.6L Ford Pintos to back their 'convictions'!

Never thought Bedminster was that bad. But Hartcliffe or 'Artcliffe as the locals would say was right down the list with its white trash 'Bristow' City lager louts!

I may well have been at this one too, about May I recall? With Alpaca Brothers in support? Oncoming Day was always a Chills' crowd fave as was Night of Chill Blue at the time.

BTW no Audioculture posting yet for Alpaca Brothers though a 'link' to Snapper. They were also from Dunedin? Whatever became of them?

Oddly enough, I can’t recall much of the gig at the Fulham Greyhoud

I was living in Bristol at the time an a couple of colleagues headed down the M4 with me to London that day. I think they played the same venue a year later - with The Bats in support I recall.

The Clean never came to Bristol in 1988 however the Chills and Sneaky Feelings did make it to the Fleece & Firkin pub where incidentally Ali Farka Toure and band also played a mind-bending set.

    Aah those were the days!

  • Hard News: Friday Music: I'm Over The Edge,

Matthew Bannister's Evolver album, which I raved about last week, is now available for online purchase from Powertool Records.

And I've got my copy from the nice folks at Powertool -and I agree it's pretty damn good - even if the opening to Dr Robert sounds like the Sesame St theme!. Love the way he turns the songs inside out, starting with Taxman. If George were still with us, I think he'd dig it. Hope McCartney and Starr get to hear this. It's often not until you hear the first lyrics of many of the tracks that you realise it's actually a Beatles song. A neat rendition of an epic recording.
