The Amundsen(?) one by the Avon is the one I saw fallen off its plinth.

Scott? I was always rather fond of that one because I know it was made by his widow, who specified that if she died before it was finished, it should be left as it was. She didn’t get to finish one of the feet, so it merges with the plinth.

Regarding cellphone charging, my flatmate has one of those chargers you wind by hand and I discovered you do a hell of a lot of winding to get there and it’s surprisingly hard work! The torch part of the thing is great though. And a radio that doesn’t need batteries is also a great thing to have.

Also +1 to the alcohol hand gel. Even with copious stored water (which we have as I flat with Captain Sensible, bless her!), boiling and decanting it for every little thing is SO tedious and time consuming.

Man, I'm trying not to think about the Arts Centre. So many memories there. Le Cafe! The Dux! Boulevard Bakehouse!

Realistically I know the heritage buildings still viable after this will be very few. I'll be one of those annoying old people who always wants to talk about the city as it was "when I was young, before the earthquake...."

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Biobbs,

Hi Biobbs, I have a few rellies in Sumner and mostly houses seem Ok except for a few near clifftop edges and under cliffs. The houses that were in the news being evacuated were all on Kinsey Terrace (Clifton) where it sounds like there is some ground instability engineers need to look at. A case of "houses being evacuated in Sumner" morphing to "Sumner being evacuated". AFAIK Sumner isn't doing particularly worse than anywhere else. You can email me your address and I might be able to give you more specific info if any of my peeps are nearby.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Emma Hart,

I would do quite a lot for a hot shower.

Honestly this time… if we didn’t have cats, we’d have left town today.

Snap. My sister from Dunedin wants to come and fetch me away, but I weigh up spending 5 and a half hours in a car with a meowing cat, each way, against the hot showers and holiday...and I stay put.

Regarding the rumour that Sumner is being evacuated: parts of the suburb only. Most homes there are in no danger from slips and rockfalls. My Mum and sister who live in Sumner were unaware there was any evacuation happening at all.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Russell Brown,

It’s better than that. He wrote that Guardian piece on his phone.

    At 2am.

Truly a superhero!! And I'm glad he and family have somewhere sane to stay. I was thinking of them worriedly last night before I had power on and knew they were OK.

Lucy, Craig, thanks for your comforting words. And thanks Russell for the awesome power of PAS to link us all together. Great to see lots of Chch PAS people checking in.

I have nothing coherent to say this morning, incredibly impressed by David's ability to write an article in the circs! Crikey.

    Arohanui to all.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

Hi everyone, power/internet just restored here. My house is OK but most things inside fell down and my street is deep under liquefaction mud and water and has what looks like a bomb crater with a car in it. Fortunately most of the houses are on a rise above the street. Damage here much worse than Sept 4. And it was very scary, even here in the suburbs. My heart goes out to those in the CBD.

Bless those linespeople who've got the power back on. WIll be a long wait for water and sewers here though I think.

Arohanui to all other Christchurch peeps, and especially to SAR, working through the night and through the aftershocks, which seem to come about one every 10 mins.

I have TRIED to go to sleep. About to try again.
I feel bad for feeling bad about my own situation when all my loved ones are safe and I have a house I can live in.

    Damn! No pony.

I will buy you a pony Lilith! Just let me know which server you play on.

Oh Bart, you're a sweetie, I don't need a virtual pony, an imaginary one will do just fine! :-)
