but opted for a G5 Nano

I have the purple one because ... it's so purty.

Never thought to use it as a timekeeping device ... hey cool there's a clock in it too :).

I always love the true technogeek responses to Apple products.

The point isn't that you can do it better with some other technology. The point is that most folks find it easier and more enjoyable to do it with Apple.

I appreciate and understand why Unix/Linux etc is superior but I still can't be bothered with it. Which kind of means it isn't really superior ... grabs for tin hat.

Is that even legal in the States, considering their really creepy corporate laws? They're obliged to maximise profits no matter what.

I thought they were obliged to maximise benefit to the shareholders. That is usually defined as dollars. But if the shareholders vote to define benefit differently then I guess they could be forced to do something that makes less money., and be sued if they didn't.

I also don't feel the need to be able to carry my entire library around - it's a very different situation to when it became possible to mobilise your music collection, for example, but it seems that that solution is being applied as being automatically desirable for books also.

    and

but I can't imagine ever needing a device with several thousand books on it

Ok, So I get that paper books are lovely and I perhaps also get that you might not want your entire SF & Fantasy collection with you all the time (although I pretty much need access to Terry Pratchett at frequent and unpredictable moments).

But have you seen our shelves of cookbooks that I absolutely want with me while I'm at the market. And the same goes for my woodworking books when I'm looking at lumber. And my wine books when I'm trying to decide which italian red was the one recommended. And that doesn't start to touch on the technical books that I would love to be able to access without having to find where the librarian has hidden them in the stack room.

It's not the fiction that is amazing - well it is - but it's the non-fiction as well. And yes some of that is on-the-web in other forms but there are a bucket load of web sites (bad ones of course) that don't come close to the usability of some of my reference books.

Will people have libraries with them - hell yeah. Good grief when MP3 devices first came out people laughed at the idea that you'd ever want more than a couple of albums worth of music to carry with you - much the same way people are scoffing at the idea of having more than one (real) book with you.

    what's wrong with the iPad.

The complaints about flash are probably overdone. Flash is quite likely to be replaced this year even U-tube is shifting away so my guess is this isn't the issue folks are thinking it is.

Of the other issues the only one that seems real is the multitasking. My guess is they decided to release the new hardware with a pretty much tried and true software - iTouch. If the hardware captures the imagination then I'm sure the software with get upgraded.

But not in here. (my current crush.)

    Nice, and purple too!

However Saben is NZ designed and their head office (where they have their annual sale) happens to be just around the corner from our home.

As for pockets my wife frequently points out the lack of pockets in women's clothing. She has also trained me to assess handbags based not just on their looks but also on the number and variety of compartments, a critical feature.

    as vanity laptop

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I don't necessarily want to upsize my bag so I can have both a cheap phone *and* an iPad in it.

They would both fit nicely in here.

Danielle I thought of the recipe book thing - but if you've seen the splatter on our recipe books now ...

Maybe we'll need a good protective cover.

Yup I want. Hell yes I want and Megan and Danielle can make all the fun of me they like because I will have one.

This is the device I want for on my lap while I'm on the couch watching TV. No more recycling paper magazines.

Will it play WoW, well it has open GL so, while I would raid with it I would play the AH.

Can it be dropped - well I expect to see a U-tube answering that question real soon. And my guess is that it will be tougher than you think. Remember the iTouch they ran over with a car that still worked?

Reading books? Yeah probably but not exclusively. It will probably change the way I shop for books.

$10 for pages and keynote and numbers??? Good grief they really are saying those products are trivial now.

Will it be a phone - um sure why not it's just another app really - but you probably will need some kind of hands free kit because holding to your ear will look really dorky.

    But no camera for skype?

And no multitasking? Ok this has to change - does anyone do only one thing at a time on a computer now? So you are going to want to have 2 or 10 apps open at once. But I guess it will take some programming.

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

Next you'll be asking me to buy Liza Minnelli

I really read that as if you were intending to buy Liza Minnelli... were you planning to put her on trademe?

And are you suggesting Glee isn't the way US high schools really are??

Seriously though I once wandered through fraternity row in Purdue university and it was just like being on a movie set. And then we lived next to the sorority houses at Texas A&M and were treated to the sight of frat boys in suits, each carrying a single red rose, serenading the sorority houses ... hmmm maybe Glee really is real.
