  • Up Front: How About Now?,

In terms of adoption law reform and transgender equality taking precedence (i) the trans community has had to wait too damned long for it as it is and (ii) inclusive adoption reform is the last same-sex parenting reform to be undertaken, as well as the last piece of substantive LGBT equality reform. When the introduction of same-sex marriage proper does occur, it'll be defused and merely a matter of formal, ritual and ceremonial equality.

I'm in favour of it. However, there's a difference between substantive equality issues like transgender legal equality and inclusive adoption reform that means that they need to precede any moves to introduce SSM proper. Still, at least we don't have to have a campaign to remove a ridiculous pre-emptive legislative ban like that horrible burnt umber rock outcrop to our northwest...

True, Andre, but Hide was the lesser of two evils when faced with Dr Richard ("I love Korean dishes") Worth, his predecessor. Who didn't last very long as National MP, remember...?

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

And one of the biggest shocks to the LGBT community was Arie's sexual orientation. Chris Banks aka Bipolar Bear has a piece on his response to the Sunday item on his blog...

Not that it'd matter to me if Arie was straight instead. I still believe we should request a Human Rights Commission inquiry into violence against people with (all manner of) disabilities, akin to that which recently occurred in the United Kingdom. And hate crimes are hate crimes, no matter who commits them, or against whom.

  • Hard News: Meanwhile in Epsom ...,

Epsom is an urban liberal seat and I wonder, is Banks an appropriate candidate for it? Much will depend on who National eventually selects- someone like Simpson or Bhatnagar (city council experience already) will indicate that they lack confidence in their satellite party or its candidate.

Is it true some nineties vintage Nats still wake up screaming when they remember the last time the former Akld mayor in question was part of their caucus...???

Cautious doesn't mean detailed and evidence-based support though. And there's still the fragmentation and obliviousness to their need for evidence-based policy from even the cannabis reform lobby...

  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob,

Yeah well, there tend to be the key issues that mobilise social liberals and conservatives alike- abortion and homosexuality. Euthanasia reform and drug policy are in the righthand corner due to the lack of professional medical opinion that supports euthanasia rights or progressive drug policy reform. And as for restrictions on alcohol availability goes, there seems to be surprising consensus across ideological lines, in favour of access and supply restrictions. And then there's the extreme issues field- like questions on welfare policy, where one would expect some stark differences.

  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob,

Insofar as the euthanasia law review went, I suspect that's merely a dog whistle to any centre-right social liberals looking on with barely disguised revulsion. Given what's happened in the Netherlands and Oregon on this issue, I think we can safely assume that there'll be no real euthanasia law reform in New Zealand until the NZMA et al change their professional opinion. As professional interests, their opinions are more valuable than those of godbots.

Have to say that I'm far more interested in what Key had to say about the whole question of welfare policy and whether the likes of Parents Inc and Destiny Church will get more dosh from the government. Although I am quite disgusted in his pandering to the anti-abortion lobby over 'parental notification', let it be noted.
