  • Southerly: Seventy per cent Monteith's,…,

    I'm so impressed David!

Now of course you will have to bring your banjo to Auckland!

At risk of being shouted down by those who know much more about music than I, to me there is something of They Might be Giants in the music as well. I guess it's the simplicity/purity of the ideas. Whatever, I enjoyed it.

    Anything but Sting!
Yeah, but that applies to every single moment in one's life.

    Every breath you take?

  • Up Front: Go For Launch,

Friday December 4: Orcon Great Blend Christmas Party, with another Nat Torkington-curated Ignite session and all kinds of awesomeness throughout the evening.

    RSVPing NOW!!!!!!

And definitely keen on the book release, I really want Dr Hay to sign a copy of his book.

I'd get Emma to sign her book for me too but I'm too scared of her to ask.

  • Southerly: Still a Scientist at Heart,

The Marsden Panel has carefully considered your preliminary observations and experiments. The panel were very impressed by the quality of the research and could clearly see the impact of further studies into your revolutionary hypotheses. We were convinced that further research by you and your team would lead to significant publications in leading journals. The panel also commented favourably on your detailed plans for the development of the young scientist (Bob). An excellent publication record by the lead researcher also suggests a strong probability of excellent outcomes for future research.

Unfortunately the excessive overheads in your grant proposal (we were unsure as the exact role "Jen" would play in future research) combined with recent funding cuts meant that the panel were only able to fund one research project this year - so we gave the money to Sir Peter's cousin*.

*Please note I don't seriously mean to suggest that the Marsden panel are anything other than incredibly dedicated and honest.

  • Hard News: Dear John,

his political vision has been quite parsimonious in my view

    This

I have a good friend who is as far right in his views as I am left. We both agree on this point - John Key has no vision for New Zealand whatsoever. His only interest is to get re-elected. And so policy is decided by essentially avoiding down-side risk over the 3 year time frame.

New Zealand as a country and as an economically or socially viable entity are irrelevant. The only thing of importance is getting elected.

Hence education policy, city planning, retirement policy, ACC policy, taxation policy are all to be dealt with expediently (urgently?) and with as little risk of dissent as possible and no view to the long term issues.

As for Goff, I'm less worried. I really think it is irrelevant what the polls say this year or the next. New Zealand voters have at best a 12 month memory and mostly closer to 6 months. There is no point in trying to win over voters now and Labour and Goff know that. What happens 12 months from the election is what matters and that's when Goff must shine. In many ways engineering the polls so that Goff is rising and Key falling from 12 to 6 months out is probably the ideal and hence paradoxically having Goff low in the polls now is probably a good thing.

  • Hard News: New Lounge Toy Update,

Actually, it boils down to the one channel: Food TV.

Same here. Sod the news, Market Kitchen is on. Of course we do have to watch Top Gear.

  • Hard News: New Lounge Toy Update,

The problem with phones isn't what you do with your hands, it's what you do with your eyes,

That's part of it but a huge part of the problem is what you do with your brain when talking to someone on the phone. Because the person talking to you can't see the road they have no idea that traffic or whatever is changing and you need to concentrate so they keep blathering on - sadly it's really hard to tune them out.

    PAMJ - Doh!

I did figure it wasn't the Pan African Medical Journal

You must be feeling better to be fiendish enough to use a simple direct reference to confuse me :P

But can you play the violin?
You know, I haven't tested that. So I bet I can.

And so long as you don't try, you will be right.

One question - I can usually figure out what the title refers to but I'm being dense today, could you give me a clue, because I don't seem to have one?
