  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to Sacha,

Exactly. Can’t believe how many people don’t get that.

I’m still not clear on what some people think they’re paying for with Sky. I looked at everything my inlaws recorded on their MySky for later viewing, and virtually all of it is stuff that’s broadcast on the Freeview channels! We record the same stuff with a commodotised DVR, but even that’s starting to become obsolete with various OnDemand services with all significant free channels except for Sky’s own Prime.

I think the nieces and nephews turn up sometimes and watch Nickelodeon and they sometimes watch the sport, but it’s no wonder that Sky’s starting to struggle to compete with many of the alternatives now becoming available. Weirdly, Sky subscribers seem to pay for everyone to not have sport on TV for free so that they can have it whilst paying for it. But maybe the sports get more money from it, or something, when they get a fraction of Sky's takings. Is it worth it?

  • Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Personally I don’t mind it, providing there is time for the hard data when data is needed.

This seems to be one of the things that really irritates many of the Campbell haters out there.

His chatty bits, and tendency to go on crusades from time to time, can distract from the reporting and be thrown around to justify allegations of bias. That said, allegations of bias against many journos these days are probably also often a product of the isolated silos and confirmation bias fostered by the internet & social media.

I'm not sure exactly where the line is, though. A journalist who's not allowed to take stances based on what they see and interpret wouldn't be much of a journalist.

  • Polity: TPP, eh?,

In the news today, from the Sustainability Council via RadioNZ:

He said while there were provisions that protected governments from being sued for acting to reduce smoking, there were no similar protections for acting to protect the environment or tackle climate change.

That risk of being sued, according to Mr Terry, would have a chilling effect on a government's willingness to undertake environmental reform in the first place.

"They'll be much less willing to do that if they are concerned about being sued and that favours retaining low standards, when those standards need to rise markedly."

  • Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to Euan Mason,

Seeing great professional broadcasters with bad hair awkwardly make their way on screen was a bit like reality TV radio, and entertaining in its own right.

I also found it great with the casual nature of those on camera, though seeing Katrina Batten duck out of the studio behind John Campbell while he’s busy talking about his next piece was distracting. What’s the point of a back-drop if she can’t be given an exit which doesn’t involve walking in front of it?

It also crossed my mind that at least some of the people who see Radio New Zealand as a haven for the long-haired commune-habitating woollen-jersey-wearing tax-spending socialists are likely to find the casual visual nature as completely justifying of their pre-existing views. :)

One peripheral benefit of the Youtube broadcast, at least, is that it makes it easy to ChromeCast it to the TV if you wanted a picture there. (Chromecast thingamajig, HDMI port in TV, home wireless network and compatible broadcasting device required, though.)

  • Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to James Littlewood*,

TV news always feels so enslaved to the image, though.

Sometimes I also have an impression that modern TV news is also semi-prioritised by the criteria of "stuff we have pictures of", or (these days) "stuff we can get a person to stand outside".

Hopefully Checkpoint, even if it does some great things with pictures, manages to stick to the regular radio requirements of only needing to describe things. Somehow it seems like a lower artificial barrier for entry to the nightly news bulletin.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Russell Brown,

Fair enough. I just thought it seemed odd for her to wear them in the studio when nobody else in the studio needed them. What to TV newsreaders do?

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live,

I’m impressed with their setup, having watched the first section.

Is there any functional need for the giant headphones (eg. which Katrina Batten wears when reading the news), or is that more just to make it look like radio?

Thanks. So it seems that this really is a new thing, unless the previous law also allowed secret searches.

It'd be interesting to know how frequently Police are using it.
