  • Legal Beagle: Tastes like democracy,

The catch is the verification of votes...If there's a dispute, the ballot papers can be counted again... The flip side, though, is that computer-based systems make it easier for disabled people to cast their vote for themselves...

Um, yeah. Exactly what Matthew said, this is pretty much what was going through my head as I was reading.

We always take our kids to the polling booth with us, and they're really looking forward to being able to vote themselves. I've never been in a situation where getting to a polling booth was a struggle, which I think is important. Voting on Saturdays just seems so obvious.

I have to say, though, that I wouldn't have bothered voting in the last local bodies if it wasn't a postal vote. I'd hate to be working through that booklet while in the booth.

  • Readers' Tips,

Emma, really?? For some reason I've become *more* susceptible to the Doom of Onions in my 30s. I've been known to weep while slicing leeks! Ridiculous.

I have found it so. And yes, either my ageing eyes suffer more, or the onions of today are more virulent than the onions of yesteryear.

A really, really surgically sharp knife helps too.

  • Readers' Tips,

Don't put your tomatoes in the fridge.

Do put your (well-wrapped) onions in the fridge, though. Makes them much less teary when you chop them.

I think you'll find that Aro Valley in Wellington is home to both the Hippys (ies?) AND the socialists.

    Both of whom vote Green.

A whole bunch of the socialists I grew up around just had major coronaries over their jugs of DB in their working men's clubs.

  • Speaker: Play by Discretion,

I don't want to second guess Vettori, or suggest that he wasn't justified in being angry. Declining to shake hands at the end of the game certainly suggested that he was rather annoyed by Collingwood's decision.

I was thinking about this last night while listening to the game, and I wonder how much of that annoyance stemmed from the rain-affected one-dayer, when England's habitual slow over rate took another victory away from NZ.

Emma; first of all Sidebottom did nothing wrong; it was an accident.

I saw some suggestion, early in the day before I'd seen film of the incident that either a)Sidebottom had deliberately got in Elliot's way, or b) once he'd hit him, he held onto him for a couple of seconds. There was a still up at The Guardian of Sidebottom with his hands on Elliot's waist. But yes, once I'd seen the vision, I entirely agree with you, he'd done nothing wrong.

It's worth noting, too, that the English cricket crowd still appear to be big supporters of the spirit of the game. They booed their own team, and I wonder how many Kiwis would do that.

  • Speaker: Play by Discretion,

Richardson was referring to an incident in 2006 when, in a test match against Sri Lanka, Brendon McCullum ran out Muttiah Muralitharan while he was walking down the pitch to celebrate Kumar Sangakkara scoring a century.

I was glad someone mentioned that, because that seemed to me to be worse than what Sidebottom did. It may be that Vettori has a different ethos for his team than Fleming did, and really wouldn't have made the same call that Collingwood did in his position, but I dunno.

  • Readers' Tips,

I worked as a captioner for four years. It's a total TV/pop culture/media/grammar nerd job.

Big cheers for Robin. Good-quality captioning makes such a difference to my daughter's life. Poor-quality captioning provides unintentional hilarity.

And yeah, my partner reminded me that the descriptive ones are read out loud, which I should have remembered, because we 'listened' to Pirates of the Carribbean once and it was a total trip.
