Can anyone explain to me why WW1 had to be fought?

As any fule kno: Archie Duke shot an ostrich because he was hungry.

    >OMG woggles. More men should wear woggles.

Woggles sort of go with the whole short trousers and knobbly knees thing, aesthetically.

If 'aesthetically' is quite the right word here....

Logical conclusion: public servants should wear woggles.

Oh, I did want to join Brownies. There was even one day every year that they got to wear their UNIFORMS to SCHOOL and SALUTE while the headmaster raised the FLAG, which my little inner fascist seems to have considered the height of awesome. (Aside: what day would that have even been? Important enough to raise a flag, not important enough to have the day off?)

My mother said no, I was too young (a filthy lie, if ever there was one). As the years passed this was replaced by mutterings about paramilitary organizations (rendered both more and less convincing by the fact that she had been a Guide and my father a Scout). Eventually she confessed that she just hadn't wanted to be roped into being Brown Owl.

  • Hard News: They don't make 'em like they…,

Kim Scheinberg and I used that very laptop to give a presentation in the Michael Fowler Centre about this amazing new thing called the world wide web. It would have been 1995 or 1996.

Ah, just a few short years after Nat Torkington and I gave a presentation around the corner at Capital Discovery Place about these amazing things called, uh, WAIS and gopher.

Pass me my buggy whip, I need to go home.

  • Hard News: The drugs don't (always) work,

I want a job at one of these newspapers. Here are some of my medical article ideas.

    - Studies have found that bandaids only aid in healing for people that actually have a wound. If you just have a tiny scratch, a bandaid is no better than a placebo. OMG BANDAIDS DON'T WORK!

    - Studies have found that if you hit your funny bone, painkillers are no better than a placebo (or swearing at any innocent bystanders). They seem to do some good for people with migraines and broken bones and cancer, but still OMG PAINKILLERS DON'T WORK!

    - Studies have found that people who are a bit puffed after running might as well take a placebo as a hit of ventolin. It does turn out that ventolin seems to work well for people with bronchospasms, but lets run with the obvious conclusion: OMG VENTOLIN DOESN'T WORK!

  • Hard News: Networking takes a back seat,

Best zoo experience evah was our 4th Form trip, during which one of Wellington Zoo's free range peacocks fluttered into the tiger enclosure and lived - or rather didn't - to regret it.

Who knew teenage girls could be so bloodthirsty? Oh. Right. Everyone.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

In Hawke's Bay in the 70's, we played tag. In playing handstands, we also used to say "Handstands cement" - was years until I realised it should have been "Handstands commence!"

We used the infamous "... pull the trigger" rhyme. In our defence, none of us (in a reasonably multiculti cohort) knew what it meant. Just a made up word that rhymes with "trigger", one presumed.

Eventually some adult overheard and gave us a vocab lesson. I remember we were horrified, but I don't specifically remember us refraining thereafter. Perhaps we figured that it was actually only a coincidence. I don't remember.

We played tag. The person doing the chasing was called "in" (not "it" or "he"). The
    New Zealand Playground Language Project
studies this and more, and gets bonus points for a questionnaire that makes the game sound like it should be R16 if not outright banned.

  • Hard News: And on into a whole new year,

That giraffe cup is basically one of my favourite things about New Zealand.

Me, too. I'm also very fond of the hot-chip cup with the newspaper pattern.

My cousins used to have a painting over their stairs, with an older woman enjoying a milkshake out of one of those cups. Can't remember the artist's name, curse it. On the tip of my tongue. Even met her one time. Google is not behaving much like a friend right now. But anyway. Very resonant painting, is where I was going with that.
