  • Field Theory: You play to win the game,

I think it would be helpful to give the score when writing about a sporting event, just for those of us who don't really care. Like the Guardian does.

The Herald does this as well. They also didn't have actual election results on Sunday morning. Lots of smug gloating, but no summary of the voting (as all the US sites had on a realtime basis).

  • Legal Beagle: Threshold,

Maybe St-Lague isn't the optimum system if you don't have a threshold?

How about abolishing the threshold, but having MPs parties that don't make 5% ables to vote on general legislation, but not confidence and supply? Which would stop them having a disproportionate say in government (and stop Peter Dunne having an associate minister job in perpetuity, which he wouldn't as a has-been National MP).

  • Hard News: History is now,

This is boring. Like watching a cricket game where nobody scores for 20 overs. We need Aggers: is that a slow medium aeroplane coming in over the White House? Reminds me of the time in '68

  • Hard News: History is now,

I guess that if political satire is dead, that should help the career of Flight of The Conchords and their unamerican, unpolitical satire.

We poisoned their asses. With poisonous gases.

Also, the Grauniad doesn't seem to be doing a test match style liveblog.

  • Hard News: God's squads,

"No Immigration Control Whatsoever" policy. Also, when I pointed out that their "MPs should get paid the average wage" policy would result on largely really rich people being in parliament,

I think these policies are reasonable if you assume that full-on socialism is also implemented, which is the doctrine of the Workers Party.

Immigration controls (which are intrinsically racist) are only really justified to prevent businesses importing cheap labour. Under socialism, everyone would have to be paid a fairly high wage so there would be no point doing this.

Equally, MPs only earn a lot because we have a system that expects high-end white-collar jobs to be rewarded with a salary several times the average. Under socialism, this wouldn't be the case. (There also wouldn't *be* any rich people to become MPs).

Not that I neccesarily support Trotskyism, but these policies are internally consistent.

  • Legal Beagle: Enhancing democracy,

I'm thinking of Jim Anderton here, who has presumably not had the opportunity to put a bill in that ballot for some time now (is he still around?)

Jim Anderton got to advance his personal 'war on drugs' crusade and ban party pills on government time. One more reason why I'm not voting Labour.

  • Legal Beagle: Enhancing democracy,

In some ways it's too easy to legislate in NZ, and this would make it easier. It also interferes with the idea that a government gets elected, governs for three years, and is judged on its record.

Incidentally, in the UK there are a lot less members bills and they can be talked out by dtermined opponents unless they get given government time.

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

Giovanni, how about: addressed mail, which contains information specifically for the addressee that I need to retain and/or act on

Basically, I want to choose what paper I pay to dispose of. If you want to communicate, use a billboard, hand out leaflets politely in the street or something

  • Field Theory: Athletes and Dicks,

Ah, but you don't have the stump mike dialog:

Chardonnay: so Mr Stanford, what is it you do?
Stanford: I'm one of them billionaire businessmen
Chardonnay: ooo, so you make a lot of money?
    Stanford: quite sufficient, thank you
Chardonnay: like my Dazza, he makes heaps of dosh, but Kevin his manager says that if he doesn't watch it he'll be playing for Lesser Snoring next year
Stanford: oh, I'm sure he's got a few years yet
Chardonnay: when do you billionaire businessman have to stop playing
Stanford: well we don't really, unless we get thrown in jail. And then we get to start again after we get out
Chardonnay: oooo, thats nice! [moves to sit on Stanford's knee]. So you've got a few years in you yet then?

I wonder if the next botheyesopen poster should feature a picture of Douglas and the line" Do *you* want to be Rogered?)
