  • Up Front: Twenty-Two Two, Two,

(This will tell you the kind of area I live in.)

I know it's not you saying it, but the school closures vs deprivation map doesn't make me as suspicious as it might. People in areas of higher deprivation are more mobile than people in wealthier neighbourhoods. They're also less likely to own property, and less likely to have job security. I would have though all of those things would make them more likely to decide that waiting for the city to rebuild was just too hard, and up sticks for elsewhere, meaning much greater roll losses in those areas than in areas where parents are tied to their houses by a mortgage.
'Course, I offer this from the distance of Wellington, so I could well be missing something.

  • Up Front: Whimsy Is an Extra 5 Cents a Word,

Oops, I clearly just failed a pop culture test.

But, well, that would fit. Noone would want to hear it because it would be too dull. Apart from the flute story: According to my version, the flute story must be an invention.

  • Up Front: Whimsy Is an Extra 5 Cents a Word,

If I were to do that, you’d all stop telling me about “that one time…” (It’s never at Band Camp. Did none of you go to Band Camp?)

I went to Band Camp. Nothing happened. Nothing whatsoever. Based on my general track record at the time, and all those other "that one time..."s that happened everywhere but at Band Camp, I am of the opinion that if nothing happened at my Band Camp, then quite possibly nothing ever happens at anyone's Band Camp. Which would be pretty disappointing really.

However, if it were true (that nothing ever happens at Band Camp), we could all just make stuff up, and say it happened at Band Camp, and it would be like secret code for "this didn't actually happen but I think it would make a good story".

  • Hard News: Calling the race before it's over, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I don't think you can use the size of the Occupy movement as proof of the size of the left. It's only really an indication of the size of the left among people who were prepared to go and camp in public places. I suspect that's not something the size of the right would be particularly keen on.

It’s the leader and whips’ job

I must have read too much (or enough?) Emma Hart. The first time I read this as "It's the leather and whips' job".
It'd certainly make Parliament TV more entertaining to watch. Depending on who was wearing the leather. Scratch that: It'd probably mostly just be more horrifying.

Thank you Blair, that’s ever so helpful, about as useful as the answers my 12-year old gives me when being cheeky. I’d give you “the look” but that doesn’t really work in print (it doesn't always work in person either, mind you, but 12-year olds are a tricky bunch), so I’ll have to just rephrase my question to “what am I missing”?

You’re putting a pretty naive & innocent spin to Cunliffe’s actions & statements. You don’t have to be a cynical hack to see this as Cunliffe trying to keep the speculation live in the hope things will turn to his personal benefit in the near future.

Depends on your view of Cunliffe really. If you're anti-Cunliffe, of course you'll describe it as "naive and innocent". If you're pro-Cunliffe, you don't think "his personal benefit" is what he's all about.

Ok, I don’t believe he’s manipulated the rule change, but he does seem to be clearly trying to take advantage of it.

I don't think "take advantage" is the phrasing I'd use either.

But trying to discpline and not just demote a caucus member, something that Chris Hipkins seems to be implying, for exercising his rights would be really worrying.

Too bleeding right. But then I find the way “party discipline” is managed to be pretty fascist in general. People should know what party policy is, and acknowledge it if the personal views they happen to be expressing are not party policy, but I do actually want to know what those views are. I can’t see how not being allowed to express dissenting views or disagree with the party Leader is anything other than fascism.

/wanders off wondering if I’m related to that “Barnard” person…
