  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

Damien, best of luck with the half-marathon. It's one of the best feelings in the world, completing a half or a full marathon. I've ran many and still really enjoy it.

    Here's my advice:

Eat loads of carbos the night before, have something like some toast and a banana for breakfast, but not a heavy, large breakfast.

While you'll be feeling fresh at the start, resist the temptation to really cane it, just take your time. You'll still be going faster than you were during training runs, anyway.
This is known as "race pace" - the crowd will pull you along and you'll feel like keeping up with others going at your pace, rather than just plodding along.
Try to stick with / near a bunch who are going at a pace you feel comfortable with, you always go faster when running in a bunch, as you "work" with each other, taking turns leading the bunch, etc.

If you're feeling good at the 10km mark, then start to crank it up. If you're fit enough to get there feeling ok, you'll be fit enough to get to the end, no trouble. Even if you're feeling a bit tired at 20km, you'll surprise yourself by automatically breaking into a sprint as soon as you see the finish line.

Most importantly: aim just to finish, not to beat a particular time. Enjoy the achievement, no matter how long it takes you. Having done one, you'll know what it involves and will almost certainly do a better time the next time.

    Steve Tew being interviewed

I wince every time I see and hear that man being interviewed. He has an over-whelming propensity for speaking managementese and gobbledegook to such an extent that he makes David Brent look reasonable.

He cannot complete a sentence without inserting "going forward, "moving on", etc, into a sentence. He really is hopeless.

  • Hard News: Iggy told me,

There's some great stories about when Iggy supported, of all people, Jimmy Barnes, at Athletic Park and Western Springs in early '89.

The gigs were sponsored by Pepsi and boy did Iggy go to town dissing it. Barnesy also wore a fair bit of crap from him, too.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

Question: apart from the King's Arms, are any other established music venues in central Auckland also facing problems if the suggested rules are applied ?

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

nope. May be more bit more than 30 seconds, but only a couple of minutes if you only count walking down Dacre St from Upper Queen.

Doh ! My bad. I've been to the KA, but never from the central city direction. So when I have been there, it's always seemed a lot further away.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

but referring to these students as white, rich and privileged

Er, because that's what a large majority of them are ?

I went back to university a few years ago and the harsh reality is that most are from good, solid, middle-class backgrounds and either went to private schools or upper-decile state schools.

One lecturer often used to take the piss out of the class for being precisely this and no one batted an eye-lid, because they all knew he was right.

Also, as a basic indication of how richer students seem to be these days, there are cars outside virtually every flat. Not just crapheaps either, a lot are standard suburban cars, there's even some SUVs / Remuera tractors.

I went down Castle St and Dundas St last evening and every flat had a car outside it.

Yet when I was a student in the early '90s, it was something of a rarity for someone in a flat to have a car. If students are supposed to be poor, then how can they all afford cars and to run them ?
