  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

politicians who campaign on the moral high ground

I don't think Winston has campaigned from the moral high ground. If he has campaigned from any high ground it has been the high ground of ethics, something that is, sadly, lacking in anything we have seen from National.
Winston has fought against the most despicable rort this country has suffered since the land grabs of the 1800s The blatant support of the National party in the raping of our country by the greedy (greed was popular in the 80s remember? it managed to cripple Labour for a while as the result of Muldoon's mistakes) was the reason Winston distanced himself from them. He does consider Muldoon to be his mentor, in some respects and those respects were he same ones that made the people of this country to respect Muldoon. History does, indeed, repeat but let us not fall down that path that follows the signpost that says "Trust the free market"

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

took (and didn't disclose - denied in fact) a loan of $100,000,

To be fair, the perceived loss of interest on the interest free loan was under the amount that needed to be declared. As the principal was repaid then I don't see a problem until you start twisting the facts.

BTW. I still think this could blow up in Nationals face, after all, it seems to be geared to distract from Nationals complete lack of coherent policy.

And in days gone by, Helen would’ve said “One of you is lying; get your facts straight and get back to me by the end of the week.”

Well, yes, if she were dealing with members of the Labour party. Methinks you anoint her with powers beyond her realm of influence.

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

Is this a precedent being set, an admission that all is not right in the secretive side of our democracy?

I do hope so. I am sure National has some skeletons in their closet that may be revealed after Winston has been vindicated and comes out swinging in his own inimitable way.
Well I would like to think so anyway, I will eat my words if the accusations leveled against Peters are proved to be true but I will not "jump the gun" and pronounce his guilt before the privilege committee has made it's finding public.

I think Glenn can look forward to having his character assassinated until a round dungeon fun would be light relief my comparison.

I have been thinking about this. Why would Glen want to see Peters "go down"? I don't think he really gives a toss about what the average Kiwi thinks of him so why would he not just continue to back Peters and by association Labour, has he been "nobbled"?. The only reason I can come up with for his, apparent, "about face" would be that he didn't get the recognition he thought he may have deserved for his donations in the past and, to be honest, what is really wrong in getting that recognition "Our man in Monaco" is hardly a position that could compromise the security of New Zealand. Knighthoods and their ilk have been bandied about as a reward for helping out for centuries without causing the downfall of freedom or democracy. To be honest I would be more likely to trust Peters than Key and his shadowy helpers on anything.

  • Hard News: National Exuberance,

Oh you're taking the piss, Steve,

Not at all. China, America, better or worse?
In terms of human rights I see little difference and that difference has become smaller over the past ten years. The number of people, on a per capita basis, locked up may even be greater in the US. The number of countries under some sort of "obligation" to the US far outnumbers those held in a similar position by China and I would say that the poor in America have very little to celebrate over their Chinese compatriots.
America good, China bad is far too simplistic.

    What I would love to see in next weeks headlines;
"Owen Glen found in Bretheren dungeon"
Mr Glen said today "I did not write that letter, I stand by Mr Peters"

  • Hard News: National Exuberance,

Well, for one thing, they're about to hold a democratic election.

I would like to think so but I have my doubts. That the last two elections have been democratic has been seriously questioned in some quaters and if their concept of democracy is illustrated by their behaviour in Iraq and Afganistan then....well. How is that a good thing?
