  • Hard News: Footnotes,

Could we perhaps insult Rankin without resorting to the gendered insults?

    Thank you Danielle...

  • Up Front: A Kink in the Pants,

Say with regards to this guy

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/2522467/Sophie-Elliott-murder-trial-delayed/

Photo plastered over the internet, reputation already half toasted, and the jury hasn't even been selected. I feel that's just wrong.

Mark - yeah, but the circumstances of this case are quite different to the others currently under discussion - her mother was in the house, the defendant had locked himself in a room with the victim, who before the door was locked was alive, and after the defendant came out was found dead with 216 stab wound...i'll be interested to see the rationale behind the not-guilty plea. Aspersions as to the victims character have already been cast during the depositions hearing....

  • Island Life: Vendor says sell!,

I think the only thing that rips my knickers about all this is the comments I keep hearing that that it's great for if you're wanting to buy in the housing market at present etc...__but__few commentators make the obvious point that very few banks if any won't loan anything more than 80% of a home's value.

We are wanting to trade up to a larger home as our family is expanding but with the real estate agent's fees, possible break fee and the dropping market, we wouldn't have enough for a deposit on a bigger house, despite having chopped a decent chunk off our mortgage in the past 3 years.

Anyone keen for a house swap?

Does anyone else spot the obvious incongruity between Ralston's pronouncements and his own past resort(s) to violence?
What I would really like to see is the Herald picking up and publishing Russell's response to Ralston's column ("...yeah right")

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

Re. food prices... we were discussing this in our sustainable living group a couple of months back and one of the (somewhat older) members of the group did point out that probably 40+ years ago, it was quite normal to spend around 25% of household income on food. Regardless, it does concern me that the greatest increase in food costs have been in the staple food items such as dairy and wheat.

Consumer confidence surveys - hmmmm... how much are they influenced by the plethora of media doom and gloom stories on the state of the economy? I've grown tired of the number of times i've had to listen to my parents and their friends sit around moaning about the state of the economy and how hard everything is and how much the Labour govt is cocking everything up, as they sit in their freehold houses, drinking bottled wine, and deciding where they're going to head for their next holiday...

I'm personally less concerned about when i'll next be able to buy a big screen TV and Blueray, than what could happen to Working for Families if the National govt do swing some kind of majority in the next election...
