  • OnPoint: You're going to pay for this,

There's been a furore in the UK after corporates and government found their ads running on Facebook (etc) against unacceptable content, like the BNP's facebook page. That rather came out of nowhere. It may well hit the income of social networking sites given that there is no way to guarantee what form user-generated content is going to take.

I'd didn't think that Ka Mate was a war chant. Can't it be summarised as:
"Cheers bro! I thought I was fucked then, eh!"

Martial Arts doesn't count as violence

    - so a fair tackle in rugby isn't violent, but a punch is?
    - can one foul at Judo or kickboxing? Does that become violence when a fair strike isn't.
    - or tripping someone in a soccer match?
    - or a bouncer in cricket, provided it isn't bowled a third time in the over?

  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

Those who think rugby leads to violence should go and visit one of the scarier UK soccer grounds, Millwall springs to mind. Despite the actual game being one where a touch on the ankle leads to tears, the crowd more than make up for it in biffo..

  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

This goes on to some extent everywhere in the world (and as Russell points out, child abuse is *three times* as prevalent in the low-welfare USA). There aren't any quick solutions.

I'm not sure if Hone Harawira's plan to "lock [all the Maori MPs] away in a barracks down Waiouru ... and don't come out till we come up with a solution" has come to fruition yet. They will be very old and grey when they finally emerge. Still, maybe it'd be good to have a new generation of Maori leaders as a result of the existing ones recusing themselves indefinitely.

In the end, child abuse will only *reduce* as people get better education, a stable income, decent housing and a positive attitude to life. The only thing politicians can really do is to promote that, not scrabble around for quick fixes that will probably be counterproductive.

    re: Mac's on Shortland St.

Do any of the usual healthcare applications run on a Mac in a supported fashion? My doctor's system is all but character based, so I kinda doubt it.

I guess in the S-S universe the Mac is the dominant desktop system and consequently all software *is* ported and supported to run on it. Just like in films all messaging applications work fullscreen with REALLY BIG TEXT. And mobiles don't exist due to their ability to destroy many plot setups (the exception to this is UK copshow The Bill, which is one of the first programs to incorporate mobility-aware plotlines).

If the maximum possible fine is $100,000, it could be cheaper to just broadcast the ads from NZ.

Can a person/company in NZ be injuncted not to break a law?

Why not lead by example - drop ad frequency on the govt owned channels, or just on TV1 , charge more, and watch the advertisers clamour for slots on the channel with so many more eyes watching it

The UK has statutory limits on the amount of advertising, with the result that airtime is correspondingly expensive. The result is that the ads are better and funnier to make those seconds count - and the British ad industry makes lots of money producing clever funny ads.

We seem to have no rules apart from the Sunday ban. You can:
    - have clearly misleading content. Suggestions that eating meat six times a week is good for you, religious advertorial, etc.
    - run blatant advertorial - I'm sure "Family Health Diary" has lots of old biddies convinced it's a government information film
    - I'm not sure if we allow product placement. TV characters do seem to have the labels hidden on their beer bottles - but maybe that's to meet overseas rules or because the brewery hasn't paid up?
